CHAPTER 2: THE SHADOW IN THE SLUMS — "KILL THE GIRL, BURY THE TRUTH"

Lily’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted around the tiny, cramped apartment. There was only one door, and the single window in the kitchen led to a rusty fire escape that had been chained shut by the landlord months ago.

"Lily..." Grandma Martha whispered, her frail body beginning to shake. "Who is at the door? What did you do, baby?"

"I didn't do anything wrong, Grandma, I swear," Lily whimpered, tears finally stinging her eyes. "I helped a man. A good man. But bad people were holding him."

BOOM.

The door groaned under a heavy kick. The cheap deadbolt began to splinter the wooden frame.

"I'm going to count to three!" the voice of Marcus roared from the hallway. "If this door isn't open, we're coming in shooting!"

"Lily, go," Martha suddenly said, her voice turning incredibly sharp and authoritative, completely unlike her usual gentle self. She grabbed Lily’s shoulders with surprising strength. "Under the sink. There’s a loose floorboard behind the pipes. Take the metal box. Run through the fire escape—use the heavy wrench on the counter to break the chain!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Lily cried, wrapping her arms around her grandmother's neck.

"You must!" Martha urged, tears leaking from her cloudy eyes. "They want you, Lily. If you stay, we both die. Go! Now!"

BOOM. The door frame cracked. A sliver of light from the hallway spilled into the darkened room.

Lily, driven by pure survival instinct, scrambled into the kitchen. She dove under the sink, her hands desperately clawing at the dark, damp wood. Sure enough, a loose floorboard gave way. She reached into the dark cavity and pulled out a small, rusted metal locked box. She stuffed it into her backpack.

She grabbed the heavy iron pipe wrench from the counter, scrambled onto the kitchen table, and pushed the window open. The freezing night air hit her face.

The fire escape platform was just outside, but a heavy, rusted padlock and chain bound the metal grate shut.

CLANG!

With all the strength in her tiny ten-year-old body, Lily slammed the wrench down on the rusted padlock. Sparks flew.

In the living room, the apartment door finally gave way with a loud crash.

"Where is she?!" Marcus bellowed.

Lily heard Grandma Martha scream as she tried to block the hallway with her fragile body. "Get out of my house! Leave her alone!"

"Out of the way, old woman!"

There was a dull, sickening thud, followed by Martha’s sharp cry of pain as she was thrown to the floor.

"Grandma!" Lily screamed, her heart breaking.

"Lily, run!" Martha gasped from the floor.

Marcus’s heavy footsteps stormed into the kitchen. Lily saw his dark silhouette fill the doorway. His eyes locked onto her. He raised a black handgun, pointing it directly at her chest.

"Got you, you little brat," Marcus sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.

CLACK!

Lily swung the wrench one last time with a desperate, screaming cry. The rusted padlock shattered. She kicked the grate open and threw herself onto the metal stairs of the fire escape just as a deafening BANG echoed through the kitchen.

A bullet shattered the window glass above her head, showering her in deadly shards.

Lily didn't look back. She scrambled down the icy metal stairs of the fire escape, her hands scraping against the rusted iron. Behind her, she could hear Marcus cursing loudly as he tried to squeeze his large frame through the small kitchen window.

She reached the bottom of the fire escape, which hung ten feet above a dark alleyway. Without hesitating, she jumped.

She hit the ground hard, rolling into a pile of discarded cardboard boxes. Pain flared in her ankle, but she forced herself up. She ran into the maze of alleys, her small size allowing her to slip through gaps in chain-link fences that her pursuers could never fit through.

Behind her, she heard Marcus shout into his radio: "She got away! She's heading south toward the industrial canal! Tell Julian we need more men!"

Thirty Minutes Later...

Three black SUVs with tinted windows pulled up to the curb outside Lily’s tenement building.

Arthur Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by four heavily armed private security guards wearing tactical gear. They hurried up the stairs, their weapons drawn.

When Arthur stepped into Apartment 2B, his heart sank.

The room was trashed. The door was off its hinges, drawers were pulled out, and glass was everywhere. On the floor lay Grandma Martha, barely conscious, clutching her chest as her breathing came in shallow, ragged wheezes.

"Call an ambulance!" Arthur shouted to his men. He knelt beside the old woman, lifting her head gently. "Ma'am? Ma'am, can you hear me? Where is Lily?"

Martha’s eyes struggled to focus on Arthur’s expensive suit. "Who... who are you?"

"I'm Arthur Vance. I work for Ethan Harrison. The man Lily saved tonight," Arthur explained quickly, his voice filled with urgency. "We're here to protect her. Where did she go?"

Martha’s lips trembled. "The... the bad men. They came. They had guns. Lily... she ran down the fire escape. They are hunting her..."

Suddenly, Martha grabbed Arthur’s sleeve with surprising force. Her eyes seemed to clear for a brief, terrifying second.

"You... you are Harrison's man?" she whispered.

"Yes, ma'am. Ethan is alive, and he wants to find Lily. He thinks... he thinks she might be his daughter, Emma."

Martha’s face went completely pale. A look of profound guilt and terror washed over her features. She began to cough, blood speckling her lips.

"She is..." Martha choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "But you don't understand... Ethan has to protect her from them... but he also has to protect her from the person who paid me to take her..."

Before Arthur could ask what she meant, the monitors of the arriving paramedic team began to wail outside. But inside the apartment, a dark shadow stepped into the doorway.

It was Marcus. He had circled back.

And in his hand, he held a burning flare.

"Too late, lawyers," Marcus laughed evilly.

He tossed the flare onto the kerosene heater in the corner of the room.

An explosion of fire instantly cut the room in half.
