CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET IN THE ASHES — "SHE WAS NEVER YOURS TO KEEP"

The heat was instantaneous and suffocating.
The dry wood of the old tenement apartment caught fire like tinder. Within seconds, thick black smoke billowed toward the ceiling, choking out the remaining air.
"Get her out of here!" Arthur yelled to his security guards, coughing violently as he shielded his face from the roaring flames.
Two guards grabbed Grandma Martha, lifting her frail body as gently as possible, while the others formed a defensive circle, firing their weapons through the smoke toward the hallway where Marcus had vanished.
They retreated down the burning stairwell just as the ceiling of Apartment 2B collapsed in a shower of roaring sparks.
Two Hours Later — ICU Private Wing, Seattle Grace Memorial
Ethan Harrison stood outside the glass window of the intensive care unit, his hands clenched into tight fists. Inside, Grandma Martha lay hooked up to a ventilator, her skin pale and covered in soot.
Arthur stood beside him, his suit ruined, his face smudged with ash.
"The doctors say she has severe smoke inhalation, on top of advanced congestive heart failure," Arthur said quietly. "She doesn't have much time, Ethan."
"And the DNA?" Ethan asked, his voice trembling with an intensity that terrified Arthur.
Arthur held up a tablet.
Ethan stared at the screen. The numbers blurred as tears filled his eyes.
"She's alive," he whispered, a sob tearing from his throat. "My Emma is alive. She didn't drown. For two years... she's been living in the slums, eating scrap metal, while I..." He slammed his fist against the wall. "Who did this, Arthur? Who took her from me?"
"Ethan, before the fire, the grandmother... Martha... she said something to me," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. "She said Lily is Emma. But she said you need to protect her from the person who paid her to take Emma two years ago."
Ethan’s head snapped around. "Paid her? Martha wasn't a random savior? She was the kidnapper?!"
"We need to ask her," Arthur said, pointing toward the room. Inside, Martha’s eyes were fluttering open. She was fighting the ventilator, her chest heaving.
Ethan didn't wait. He pushed the door open, ignoring the alarms that began to beep as he stepped into the sterile room. He rushed to the bedside and took Martha’s hand.
"Martha. Can you hear me?" Ethan pleaded. "I am Ethan Harrison. Emma’s father. Please, tell me the truth. I won't hurt you. Just tell me who took my baby."
Martha looked at Ethan. Tears rolled down her temples, disappearing into her white hair. She reached up with a trembling, weak hand and pulled the oxygen mask slightly off her face.
"I... I was poor," she gasped, her voice a dry rattle. "My own grandson was sick... I needed money for his surgery. A woman approached me. She said... she said the child needed to disappear. She paid me fifty thousand dollars to take Emma from the river bank after the car went over."
"Who?" Ethan growled, his heart shattering into a thousand pieces. "Who paid you?"
"She told me to drown her," Martha sobbed, her chest spasming. "But I couldn't do it. I looked into her sweet eyes... she had that little scar from her fall... I couldn't do it. So I hid her. I raised her as my granddaughter. I called her Lily..."
"Who paid you, Martha?!" Ethan demanded, his voice cracking. "Was it Julian? My partner?"
Martha shook her head weakly, her eyes filled with an absolute, paralyzing terror.
"No... not Julian. Julian only found out about her last week when he saw her at the salvage yard... The woman who paid me... she wanted your inheritance all for her own son... It was your wife, Ethan. It was Victoria."
Ethan froze. The world around him seemed to stop spinning.
Victoria.
His wife. The woman who had comforted him for two years over the loss of his daughter. The woman who had urged him to rewrite his will, leaving everything to her and her biological son from a previous marriage.
Before Ethan could speak, Martha’s monitors flatlined into a continuous, high-pitched scream.
Doctors rushed into the room, pushing Ethan and Arthur back. But Ethan couldn't feel his legs. His mind was trapped in a nightmare of betrayal.
Suddenly, Arthur’s phone vibrated. He answered it, listened for three seconds, and his face went completely ghostly white.
He looked at Ethan with utter horror.
"Ethan... our security team tracking Lily's phone signal... they just lost her. Julian's men didn't get her."

"Then who has her?" Ethan choked out.
"Victoria’s private security detail just picked her up near the docks," Arthur whispered. "They have Lily."
