CHAPTER 1: The Shadow of the Golden Cage

The air inside the breakroom of The Daily Grind instantly grew cold. Sarah felt her heart stop, the cheap plastic tray she was holding slipping from her numb fingers and clattering onto the linoleum floor. A half-empty cup of espresso spilled, dark liquid spreading like a stain across the white tile.

She didn't care about the mess. Her eyes were locked onto Lucy’s phone screen.

WANTED: MISSING MOTHER AND CHILD

REWARD: $100,000 CASH FOR DIRECT INFORMATION Tech Billionaire Robert Carson is pleading for the safe return of his beloved wife, Sarah Carson, and their six-year-old daughter, Emma. He fears they have been abducted or are under extreme mental distress.

Beside the text was a high-resolution photograph. Sarah looked radiant in it. Her hair was perfectly coiffed, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that cost more than she had ever earned in a year. Beside her stood Robert, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. To the public, it looked like a loving embrace. To Sarah, she could still feel the phantom bruise of his fingers digging into her ribs beneath the silk, warning her to smile for the cameras.

"Sarah..." Lucy whispered, looking from the glowing screen to Sarah’s pale, makeup-free face. "That's... that's you. And Emma."

"It's not what it looks like," Sarah gasped, her voice cracking. She took a step back, her back hitting the cold metal of the staff lockers. "Lucy, please. He’s not trying to save us. He’s hunting us."

"One hundred thousand dollars," Lucy breathed, her fingers trembling over the glass of her phone. She wasn't a bad person, but she was a single mother living paycheck to paycheck, constantly fighting off eviction notices. The sheer weight of that number hung in the air like a physical entity.

"Lucy, if he finds us, he will kill me. And he will lock Emma in a room and never let her see the light of day again," Sarah pleaded, tears spilling over her eyelashes. She grabbed Lucy’s hands, feeling the girl's hesitation. "Please. I am begging you. Do not call that number."

Before Lucy could answer, the door to the breakroom swung open.

James Anderson stood in the doorway. He was wearing his usual tailored charcoal suit, but his relaxed expression vanished the moment he saw Sarah’s tear-stained face and the spilled coffee. His eyes shifted to Lucy, who was frantically trying to hide her phone behind her back.

"What's going on in here?" James asked, his voice calm but carrying an undeniable authority.

"Nothing, Mr. Anderson!" Lucy said quickly, her voice a pitch too high. "Just... an accident. I’ll clean it up."

James didn't look at the coffee. He walked straight to Sarah, stopping a respectful distance away. "Sarah. Look at me."

Sarah raised her eyes, terrified of what she would see. Pity? Calculation? Was he already calculating how $100,000 would look on his company's balance sheet?

"I know who your husband is," James said quietly.

Sarah’s breath hitched. She prepared herself to run. She would grab Emma from the small play area in the back office, run out the alley door, and lose herself in the crowded streets of Manhattan. They would sleep on park benches again. It was better than going back.

But James didn't reach for his phone. Instead, he turned to Lucy.

"Lucy, take the rest of the day off. With pay. Go home, spend time with your son, and forget everything you saw or heard in this room today. Do you understand?"

Lucy looked at James, then at Sarah. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Finally, Lucy nodded slowly. "I... I understand, Mr. Anderson. Thank you." She grabbed her purse, gave Sarah a fleeting, apologetic look, and slipped out of the room.

When the door clicked shut, James turned back to Sarah.

"He has resources I can't even begin to match, Sarah," James said, his face grim. "He doesn't just have money; he has politicians, police chiefs, and private mercenaries on his payroll. If he has put up a public reward, it means his private search has failed, and he is getting desperate. Desperate men are dangerous."

"I have to leave," Sarah sobbed, covering her face. "I've put you in danger. I’ve put this place in danger. I’ll take Emma and go tonight."

"And go where?" James stepped closer, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "To another shelter? He owns half the real estate companies that fund them. To another state? He has facial recognition software tracking every major airport and train station. You won't make it past New Jersey."

"I can't go back to him, James! You don't know what he did to us!"

"Then don't," James said firmly. "We fight."

Sarah looked up, bewildered. "Why are you doing this? You don't even know me. You bought us McDonald's, and now you’re risking your entire life for us. Why?"

May you like

James looked away for a brief second, a shadow of deep pain crossing his face before it was replaced by cold resolve.

"Because Robert Carson took everything from me ten years ago," James said, his voice dripping with ice. "And I've been waiting for a reason to tear his empire down."
