CHAPTER 2: The Whispers in the Dark

The safe house was a small, unassuming brownstone in Brooklyn, owned by a shell company James had set up years ago. It had no internet, no smart devices, and no cameras. It was a ghost house.

Sarah sat on the edge of a plush sofa, watching Emma play with her gray stuffed rabbit on the rug. To Emma, this was an adventure. To Sarah, it was a stay of execution.

James stood by the window, peeking through the heavy velvet curtains down at the street below.

"We are safe here for now," James said, turning to face her. "But Carson's men are already crawling all over the city. I had my security detail sweep the cafe after you left. Two men in dark suits were asking questions within an hour of the reward going live."

"Did they find out about Lucy?" Sarah asked, clutching her knees to her chest.

"No. I had Lucy relocated to a friend's house upstate. She’s safe, and she’s keeping her mouth shut. But Carson isn't stupid. He will trace the credit card I used at the McDonald’s on Fifth Avenue. He will look at the security footage. He will see me talking to you."

Sarah felt a cold sweat break out on her neck. "If he links you to us..."

"He will come for me. And that is exactly what I want," James said, a dark smile playing on his lips.

"I don't understand," Sarah said. "What did he do to you? You said he took everything."

James sat down in the armchair opposite her, leaning forward, his hands clasped between his knees.

"Ten years ago, I wasn't just a cafe owner, Sarah. I was the co-founder of Carson Tech. Robert and I started it in a garage in Palo Alto. I wrote the code; he did the sales. We were brothers in all but blood. But when our first major security software went viral, Robert wanted it all. He didn't want to share the spotlight, and he didn't want to share the billions."

James's eyes darkened, remembering the betrayal.

"He framed me. He fabricated evidence showing that I had sold proprietary code to foreign governments. Overnight, I was blacklisted, sued into bankruptcy, and nearly sent to federal prison. The only reason I survived was because a friendly judge saw through the fabrication and dismissed the charges, but the damage was done. My reputation was ruined. My fiancee left me. My father had a stroke from the stress and passed away. Robert took my life, packaged it, and sold it to Wall Street."

Sarah gasped. "He... he told me he built the company entirely on his own. He said his former partner was a criminal who tried to ruin him."

"Robert is a master of rewriting history," James said bitterly. "But he forgot one thing. I wrote the core architecture of his entire operating system. And I left a backdoor."

Before Sarah could process this revelation, a loud, sharp knock echoed through the house.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Emma jumped, dropping her rabbit and scrambling into Sarah’s arms. Sarah held her tight, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

James immediately pulled a small, silver pistol from his waistband. He motioned for Sarah and Emma to slip into the hallway closet.

Sarah squeezed into the dark closet, holding Emma’s face against her shoulder, whispering silent prayers into her hair. Through the crack in the door, she watched James approach the front entrance.

"Who is it?" James called out, his voice steady.

"Delivery for Mr. Anderson," a muffled voice replied from the other side. "I have a package that requires a physical signature."

"Leave it on the porch," James said.

"I can't do that, sir. The sender specified it must be handed to you directly. It's from a Mr. Robert Carson."

The name echoed through the quiet house like a death knell.

James locked eyes with the closet door, a silent warning to Sarah to remain absolutely still. He reached for the deadbolt, clicked it open, and opened the door just a crack, keeping his weapon hidden behind the frame.

Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver. It was a tall, heavily-built man with scarred knuckles and cold, dead eyes.

"Mr. Anderson," the man said, a sinister grin spreading across his face. "Mr. Carson sends his regards. He wants to know if you've seen his wife."

Suddenly, the man threw his weight against the door.
