CHAPTER 2 — The Screen That Could Not Be Switched Off

At exactly 8:17 p.m., the orchestra stopped.

A giant projector descended from the ballroom ceiling.

Vivian smiled proudly.

"A short family video," she announced.

"Our son's first month."

Guests applauded.

The lights dimmed.

Instead of baby pictures...

The screen remained black.

Then...

A timestamp appeared.

Three Weeks Earlier.

Vivian's private dressing room.

No one spoke.

The room froze.

Vivian herself stared at the screen in confusion.

Then her own voice filled the ballroom.

"Did she sign everything?"

Another voice answered.

Attorney Malcolm Reed.

"She was heavily medicated."

"The signatures are complete."

"And if she remembers?"

Vivian laughed.

"Poor girls don't win against old money."

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

Charles slowly lowered his glass.

Another clip.

Hospital hallway.

Vivian speaking with the hospital administrator.

"I don't care what the original file says."

"Replace it."

"I want every document naming Anna removed."

The administrator nodded.

Another clip.

Nursery.

Midnight.

Vivian stood beside the crib.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

She looked irritated.

The baby cried.

Loudly.

She glanced around before speaking.

"I waited eighteen years for this family fortune."

"I won't let some waitress ruin everything."

She walked away.

Leaving the crying infant alone.

The ballroom had become silent.

One elderly woman covered her mouth.

Someone whispered...

"My God..."

Then came the recording no one expected.

Poolside.

Vivian standing beneath moonlight speaking on her phone.

Her exact words echoed through every speaker.

"After tomorrow's party..."

"Make it look like she slipped."

"I don't want blood."

"I want sympathy."

The ballroom exploded.

Women screamed.

Men stood up.

Someone shouted...

"Call the police!"

Vivian lunged toward the projector controls.

The screen didn't change.

She hit every button.

Nothing happened.

Mr. Graves quietly removed a small remote from his pocket.

"I disconnected your system this afternoon, Madam."

Vivian turned white.

"You?"

He bowed politely.

"I've served this family for thirty-eight years."

"But I serve truth longer."

Then...

He handed Charles a thick brown envelope.

Charles opened it.

Inside were copies of every hidden recording.

Every forged contract.

Every altered birth certificate.

Every bank transfer.

Every bribe.

Years of evidence.

Charles looked at Vivian.

For the first time in their marriage...

He didn't see his elegant wife.

He saw a criminal.

Vivian grabbed his arm desperately.

"Charles, listen to me—"

He stepped backward.

"No."

"You listen."

He looked directly at Anna.

"I failed you."

The words shattered the room.

Then the mansion doors burst open.

Police officers entered.

Detectives.

State investigators.

And behind them...

A woman wearing a navy suit.

Federal Prosecutor Eleanor Brooks.

She calmly held up a warrant.

"Vivian Whitmore..."

"You are under arrest for fraud, conspiracy, document forgery, attempted murder, and child trafficking."

Vivian laughed hysterically.

"You have recordings."

"You don't have proof they're authentic."

The prosecutor smiled.

"We do."

She pointed toward Anna.

"Because she wasn't the only one recording."

Every eye turned.

Another voice echoed from the entrance.

"I was."

Standing there...

May you like

Was the one person Vivian believed she had already paid to disappear.

The hospital nurse.
