Chapter 1 - THE VEILED SACRIFICE

The Moment the Mafia Boss Claimed the Wrong Sister“And after he discovers the truth?” Nora’s voice did not shake, though her heart was hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against her ribs.

Conrad Bennett’s eyes hardened into cold flint. “After he discovers the truth, you will already be his wife. The contracts will be locked in the DeSantis vault. If he kills you, he loses the legal right to our shipping lanes. He won't kill you, Nora. He’s a businessman. But if you ruin this for us, I will personally sign the transfer papers for your grandmother tonight.”

The threat was not empty. It never was.

Twenty minutes later, Nora stood at the end of the grand ballroom aisle. The heavy ivory silk of Vanessa’s French designer gown clung tightly to her curves, the seams practically screaming under the pressure of a body they were never meant to accommodate. The corsetry dug mercilessly into her ribs, but it was the thick, tiered lace veil cascading over her face that felt like a true shroud. Through the sheer, dark mesh, the ballroom looked like a gathering of ghosts.

The strings of the quartet swelled into a haunting, low melody.

At the altar stood Luca DeSantis.

He was a mountain of a man, silhouetted against the towering stained-glass windows of the Bennett estate. Even through the veil, Nora could feel the sheer, oppressive gravity of his presence. He wore a bespoke black tuxedo that did nothing to soften the brutal, lethal edge of his posture. His dark hair was brushed back, exposing a sharp, angular jawline scarred lightly near the ear.

Every eye in the room was on her. Or rather, on the woman they thought she was.

As her father led her down the aisle, his grip on her elbow was tight enough to bruise. When they finally reached the altar, Conrad took her hand and placed it into Luca’s waiting palm.

The moment their skin met, a jolt of pure electricity surged up Nora’s arm. Luca’s hand was massive, calloused, and freezing cold. His fingers closed around hers, not with the gentle touch of a groom, but with the unyielding iron grip of a captor.

"You're late, cara," Luca murmured, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through Nora’s chest.

She didn't dare speak. She merely inclined her head, keeping her eyes glued to the floor.

The priest began the ceremony, his voice a droning blur. Nora’s mind raced. Did Luca notice the difference? Vanessa was six inches slimmer. This dress had been hastily let out by frantic maids in under fifteen minutes, the back held together by heavy-duty pins concealed beneath the lace overlay. She could feel Luca’s intense, dark eyes burning through the veil, tracking the line of her throat, the rise and fall of her chest.

When it came time to sign the marriage certificate—a binding legal requirement demanded by the DeSantis family before the vows were even finalized—the documents were laid out on a mahogany table beside the altar.

Nora’s hand trembled as she took the pen. She signed the name Nora Bennett in rapid, elegant cursive. Her father had instructed her to forge Vanessa’s signature, but Nora knew the law. A forged signature would render the contract void immediately, giving Luca a reason to slaughter her family. But a signed contract by a legitimate Bennett daughter? That was a gray area her legal mind could exploit.

Luca took the pen next. He didn't even look at the paper as he scribbled his name. His eyes remained fixed entirely on her face behind the lace.

"The rings," the priest intoned.

As Luca slid the heavy platinum band onto her finger, the doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

“Get down!” a voice screamed.

Everything happened in a fraction of a second. The glass chandeliers overhead shattered into a million glittering shards as gunfire erupted from the foyer. The strings of the quartet died in a chorus of screams.

Nora panicked, stumbling backward. The gold locket—the one her grandmother had given her, containing the encrypted data of Bennett Maritime's secret accounts—snapped from her neck. It struck the marble floor with a sharp clink.

She dropped to her knees in the dark, chaotic hallway just outside the ballroom doors. The air instantly filled with the stench of gun oil, expensive champagne, and burning upholstery.

"Nora!" her father shouted from somewhere inside, using her real name in his panic.

Her fingers finally closed around the warm gold locket just as a blinding white flashbang swallowed the hallway.

The world went dead silent, replaced by a high-pitched ringing in her ears. She braced for the impact of a bullet, realizing with terrifying certainty that her family had left her behind to die.

But death didn't come.

Instead, two massive, ink-tattooed hands scooped her up from the floor. She was lifted effortlessly against a broad, muscular chest that felt like solid marble. The scent of expensive cologne, tobacco, and raw copper filled her senses.

Luca DeSantis didn't look back at the screaming crowd or the burning ballroom. He threw his heavy wool coat over her shoulders, pinned her securely against his chest, and carried his curvy, veiled bride out into the freezing New Jersey night.
