Chapter 2 - IN THE LION’S DEN

The Veil Comes Off, and the Real Revenge BeginsThe ride in the back of the armored Cadillac black SUV was dead silent.
Nora sat huddled against the leather seat, the heavy wool coat still wrapped around her shivering frame. Beside her, Luca DeSantis was barking quiet, lethal orders into a encrypted satellite phone.
"Clean up the estate. Secure the perimeter at the docks. I want to know who authorized the hit at the wedding by midnight," Luca commanded, his voice devoid of any emotion. He hung up and turned his head slowly toward her.
The interior of the vehicle was dimly lit by the crimson glow of the dashboard. Nora kept her head down, her hands clutching the gold locket hidden inside her palm. The veil was still intact, but it felt like a ticking time bomb.
The SUV tore through the iron gates of a secluded estate on the cliffs of Port Mercer, stopping before a brutalist, fortress-like mansion.
Before Nora could move, her door was pulled open. Luca stood there, holding out a hand. When she hesitated, he simply reached in, grabbed her by the waist, and pulled her out, carrying her over his shoulder up the stone steps and into a massive, firelit study.
He kicked the heavy oak doors shut behind them.
The silence in the room was deafening. Luca walked over to a crystal decanter, poured two fingers of amber whiskey, and downed it in one swallow.
"Take it off," he said, his back turned to her.
Nora’s breath hitched. "What?"
Luca turned around slowly. He began unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket, tossing it onto a leather armchair. "The veil, cara. Take it off. Or I will rip it off myself."
Knowing she had no choice, Nora raised her trembling hands. She caught the edge of the lace and pulled it upward, letting it slide off her head and pool onto the floor.
She braced herself for the explosion. She waited for him to draw a weapon, to scream, to realize he had been cheated out of his beautiful, golden prize.
Luca walked over to her, his heavy footsteps echoing in the quiet room. He stopped mere inches away, towering over her. His gaze dropped, scanning her face, the dark, wild curls framing her cheeks, and then traveled deliberately down to her lush, hourglass curves that threatened to burst through the ivory silk seams.
A dark, dangerous smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"You aren't Vanessa," he murmured softly.
"No," Nora whispered, lifting her chin, forcing herself to meet his terrifying grey eyes. "I’m not. My father lied to you. The wedding was a setup to save their own skins. If you want to kill me, do it. But know that my death voids the shipping rights contract."
Luca let out a low, rumbling laugh that sent shivers straight down her spine. He reached out, his thumb catching her chin, forcing her face up.
"Kill you? Why would I kill you, Nora?"
Nora froze. He knew her name.

"You... you knew?" she breathed.
"I knew Vanessa ran away three days ago," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I knew your father planned to swap you at the altar. And I let him do it."
