Chapter 3 - The Queen’s Counter-AttackThe legal earthquake didn't take long to hit the epicenter of Whitmore society.

Within forty-eight hours of Arthur Vance filing the activation notice of Richard Whitmore’s true will, Linda received her formal eviction notice and a freeze on her multi-million-dollar annual disbursements.
Her reaction was nothing short of apocalyptic.
We were safely ensconced in Daniel’s high-rise downtown apartment—a sterile, secure fortress with 24-hour doormen, keycard elevators, and bulletproof floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Charleston harbor. My recovery was slow, complicated by the trauma of the assault, but the distance from Linda’s toxic orbit worked wonders for my healing body and frayed nerves.
That afternoon, my phone buzzed violently on the kitchen island. Then Daniel’s phone buzzed. Then Arthur Vance called.
"Don't answer," Daniel said, walking over with a mug of steaming chamomile tea for me. He looked at his vibrating screen, which displayed a relentless stream of incoming calls from unknown numbers, blocked IDs, and frantic texts from extended family members. "She’s mobilizing the flying monkeys."
"Who’s calling?" I asked, wincing as I shifted my weight on the barstool.
"Everyone," Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Aunt Beatrice, Uncle Greg, three different local gossip columnists, and the board of the Charleston Heritage Charity, which Mom currently chairs. Word leaked that she’s being forced out of the Whitmore estate. She’s spinning a narrative that we—specifically you, Chloe—duped a grieving widow out of her home while she was still mourning Megan's ruined wedding."
"She’s projecting," I said bitterly. "It’s what she always does. But can she actually fight the will? Arthur said it was ironclad."
"Arthur is a shark," Daniel reassured me, kissing the top of my head. "The clause is airtight. Mom assaulted you in a hospital room with a medical witness and security guards present. There is a police report stamped and filed. She has zero legal ground to stand on. She’s just throwing a tantrum because she’s never heard the word 'no' in her entire life."
Except, Linda Whitmore wasn't just throwing a tantrum. She was plotting.
Two days later, the front desk intercom buzzed. The doorman’s voice came through, sounding tense and apologetic.
"Mr. Whitmore? I’m sorry to bother you, but there’s a woman downstairs in the lobby demanding access. She’s accompanied by... well, she’s accompanied by local media and two police officers."
Daniel and I exchanged a sharp glance.
"Police officers?" Daniel’s voice dropped an octave. "Did she file a counter-report?"
"No, sir," the doorman replied quickly. "She claims you are holding her daughter hostage and conspiring to commit elder abuse and financial fraud. She’s making a scene in the lobby. The building manager is trying to contain her, but she’s threatening to bring cameras up."
"Send them up," a cool, calm voice interrupted over the intercom speaker.
Daniel whipped his head around. Arthur Vance had just stepped out of the private elevator foyer, having used his legal partner keycard to bypass the front desk. The elderly attorney looked immaculate in a charcoal bespoke suit, carrying his leather briefcase like a loaded weapon.
"Arthur? What are you doing here?" Daniel asked. "How did you get past the lobby?"
"I parked in the subterranean garage and came up the service elevator," Arthur said smoothly, setting his briefcase down on the marble dining table and popping the brass latches. "And to answer your question, Daniel, you should always invite your enemies into the light. Let her come up. Let her bring her cameras and her rented badges. It’s time to pull off the final bandage."
Ten minutes later, the private foyer double-doors banged open.
Linda strode into our penthouse like an invading general. Her silver hair was coiffed to perfection, her designer sunglasses perched defiantly on her nose despite being indoors, and her face twisted into a mask of theatrical, trembling grief. Behind her trailed two city police officers looking thoroughly embarrassed, followed closely by a camera crew from a local tabloid news channel, led by an ambitious young reporter holding a boom microphone.
"Where is he?! Where is my son?!" Linda wailed, thrusting her hand forward in dramatic fashion. "They’ve brainwashed him! They’ve locked him away in this sterile cage while that gold-digging parasite steals everything our family built!"
Daniel stepped forward, shielding me slightly as I sat steadily on the sofa. His voice was like shattered glass.
"Get out of my home, Linda."
"Oh, listen to him!" Linda shrieked, turning dramatically to the camera crew. "He doesn't even recognize his own mother anymore! They drugged him! They isolated him! And look at her—sitting there looking like a delicate flower after she ruined my daughter’s wedding on purpose!"
The reporter stepped forward, thrusting the microphone toward Daniel. "Mr. Whitmore, allegations are being made that you and your wife have illegally frozen Mrs. Whitmore’s assets and evicted her from her lifelong home under dubious legal pretenses. How do you respond to claims of elder abuse?"
The room went dead silent. The camera red light blinked mockingly in the corner.
Before Daniel could speak, Arthur Vance stepped out from the shadows of the kitchen island, his silver hair catching the light, a thin, predatory smile playing on his lips.
"I’ll answer that question," Arthur said smoothly, stepping directly into the frame of the camera.
Linda froze, her theatrical wail catching in her throat as she recognized the lawyer. "Arthur... what are you doing here? This is a family matter, you have no right—"
"I have every right, Linda," Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. He pulled a thick, official document from his briefcase. "As the executor of Richard Whitmore’s true, unalterable estate trust, I am here to ensure that public record is accurately maintained."
Arthur turned to the camera reporter, speaking with crisp, authoritative clarity. "The asset freeze and eviction of Linda Whitmore are not 'dubious.' They are the direct legal consequence of Section 14, Paragraph C of the Whitmore Family Trust—a clause triggered by a very specific, documented event."
"What event?!" the reporter demanded, smelling a Pulitzer.
Arthur didn't blink. "Three nights ago, at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, Linda Whitmore physically assaulted her daughter-in-law, Chloe Whitmore, striking her directly across a fresh, life-threatening surgical incision resulting from a ruptured appendix."
Gasps echoed through the room. The two police officers exchanged sharp glances, their expressions shifting from polite escort duty to genuine alarm.
"That’s a lie! A filthy lie!" Linda shrieked, her face turning a mottled, furious crimson as she lunged toward Arthur. "She faked it! Everyone knows she faked it!"
"Unfortunately for you, Linda," Arthur said, holding up a certified stack of papers stamped by the hospital administration, "hospital security cameras captured the entire assault in crystal-clear high definition. Furthermore, the attending physician, two registered nurses, and hospital security have provided sworn affidavits."
Arthur stepped closer to Linda, lowering his voice into a chilling whisper that carried clearly over the microphone.

"The police are not here to investigate us, Linda. They are here because my office filed a formal criminal complaint for felony assault and battery against you this morning. The arrest warrant was signed by a judge twenty minutes ago."
The color drained entirely from Linda’s face. The cameras zoomed in on her trembling lips as the two police officers slowly stepped forward, clicking their handcuffs into place.
