Chapter 7 - The Ultimate Reckoning"Chloe, look out!"

Daniel threw himself across the kitchen island, tackling his mother mid-air just as she flung the contents of the bottle. Most of the liquid splattered harmlessly against the granite countertop, hissing slightly as it ate into the stone polish.
A violent struggle ensued on the linoleum floor.
Linda shrieked and scratched like a cornered animal, her fingernails tearing deep bloody gouges into Daniel’s face and neck. But Daniel didn't strike her; with cold, calculated precision, he pinned her wrists to the floor, using his body weight to neutralize her completely.
"It’s over, Mom," Daniel panted, blood dripping from his cheek, his voice cracking with emotional agony. "It’s finally over."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second, their red and blue strobe lights flashing wildly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the historic home. Within moments, heavy footsteps echoed on the front porch, followed by shouted commands.
"Police! Drop your weapons! Hands behind your back!"
Three armed officers flooded the kitchen, guns drawn, quickly securing the area. One officer cuffed Linda as she kicked and screamed obscenities, her silver hair matted with sweat and rain, her designer dress ruined forever. As they hoisted her to her feet and dragged her out toward the waiting patrol car, her final, venomous screech echoed down the street:
"You'll rot in hell for this, both of you! You'll never be free of me!"
Then, the front door slammed shut, cutting off her voice. The house fell into a profound, suffocating silence.
Daniel slumped against the kitchen cabinets, burying his face in his hands. His shoulders shook as the shock finally caught up with him, releasing years of accumulated trauma, abuse, and the devastating realization that the woman who gave him life was a monster who had stolen his father's.
I walked over, ignoring the dull ache in my healing abdomen, and knelt beside him. I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, pulling him close against my chest.

"I've got you," I whispered softly into his hair, repeating the exact words he had said to me in that sterile hospital room weeks ago. "We're safe now, Daniel. It's over."
He wept into my shoulder, holding onto me like a drowning man clutching a lifeline.
