Chapter 1 - The Code Blue and the Fall of a TyrantThe monitors didn’t just beep—they shrieked in a chaotic, synchronized panic. High-pitched, jagged waves spiked across the green digital screen, mirroring the white-hot agony tearing through my abdomen. The heavy blow Linda’s hand had delivered to my fresh surgical incision felt like a direct lightning strike. A sickening tear of internal tissue echoed faintly in my ears above my own ragged screams.

"She’s bleeding through! Code red! We need the attending surgeon back in room four, stat!" Nurse Rachel’s voice cracked with absolute terror as she threw her entire body weight against the bedside, pressing heavy, sterile gauze directly into my wound to staunch the spreading crimson stain.
Warm blood soaked through my hospital gown, hot and terrifyingly fast. The drainage tube, violently jerked by Linda’s assault, began to back up with dark fluid. Darkness clawed at the edges of my vision, pulling me under, but the sheer adrenaline of sheer survival kept me tethered to the harsh, sterile light of the ceiling tiles.
Across the room, the atmosphere was lethal.
Daniel stood immovable, a terrifying monument of betrayal and fury. His chest heaved beneath his rumpled wedding shirt, the silver tie dangling uselessly like a noose. He had caught his mother’s wrist mid-swing just in time to stop a second blow, shoving her back with a raw, brutal strength born of pure protective instinct.
Linda had slammed hard against the drywall, her silver mother-of-the-bride gown rustling like dry autumn leaves. For a fleeting second, her eyes widened in shock—not from remorse, but from the sheer audacity that her son, her prized possession, had dared to lay hands on her.
"Daniel!" Linda shrieked, her voice cracking into an ugly, theatrical whine as she clutched her bruised wrist. "How dare you! Look at what this manipulative parasite has done to our family! She staged this whole disaster just to ruin Megan's wedding, and now you’re—you’re attacking me?"
"Shut up," Daniel whispered. It wasn’t a shout. It was a low, guttural growl that dropped the temperature in the room by ten degrees. He didn’t look at her face; his eyes were fixed on the widening crimson stain soaking through the bandages over my stomach. "Get out."
"You are choosing her over your own flesh and blood?" Linda’s voice rose to a hysterical shriek, drawing alarmed hospital staff and a burly security guard rushing through the open doorway. "Over your sister's special day? She’s a liar! She’s faking—"
"Ma'am, step away from the bed immediately," the security guard commanded, planting his broad frame between Linda and the bed as two doctors burst through the door, their faces grim.
Daniel finally turned his head, locking eyes with the woman who had birthed him. The look in his eyes wasn’t anger anymore; it was a cold, absolute void. The cord was cut, permanently and irrevocably.
"You are not my mother anymore," Daniel said, his voice ringing out clearly over the shrill chorus of the heart monitors. "You are a monster who just tried to murder my wife on an operating table. Security, escort her out of this hospital. If she comes within five hundred yards of us ever again, call the police."

"Daniel! You'll regret this! You'll come crawling back when you realize what she—" Linda’s screeching protest was cut short as the security guard gripped her elbow and forcefully marched her backward out of the room, her silver gown sweeping the linoleum in a frantic blur.
As the heavy door clicked shut, sealing her out, my vision finally went black. The last thing I felt was Daniel’s trembling, desperate hand gripping my fingers, whispering over and over again, "I’ve got you, Chloe. I’m not going anywhere."
