Chapter 3 - A Deadly Chess Match

The silence in the vanity room was deafening. Mateo stared at the barrel of the revolver, then looked up into his wife’s beautiful, venomous eyes.

"You're insane," Mateo breathed, holding up the vial and the paper. "This is murder, Valeria. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

Valeria let out a soft, musical laugh that made Mateo’s skin crawl. "Oh, Mateo. My sweet, naive, self-made millionaire. Who is going to believe you? To the high society of Mexico City, I am a saint. I am the patron of three orphanages. I am the woman who rescued an old, illiterate peasant woman from Jalisco and brought her into a mansion."

She took a step closer, the gun never wavering. "And as for this little vial? I can easily say it belongs to you. After all, everyone knows how stressed you’ve been. The pressure of the European expansion... the burden of caring for a sick mother. What if the great Mateo went mad with guilt and tried to end his mother’s suffering himself? Or better yet, what if you had a sudden, tragic accident?"

"If you shoot me here, you’ll never get away with it," Mateo countered, desperately trying to keep his voice steady as his mind raced for a way out. "The house is filled with security cameras. Don Chente knows I came home because of my mother."

"Don Chente is currently being detained by some very unfriendly associates of mine, accused of a massive robbery," Valeria smiled, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "And as for the security cameras? Who do you think manages the servers, my love? They’ve been on a 'technical maintenance loop' for the last two hours. As far as the digital record is concerned, you haven't even arrived home yet."

Mateo realized with a sinking dread that Valeria had planned this with terrifying precision. She wasn't acting alone. A plan this sophisticated, involving legal notary scams and corporate sabotage with the Ruiz Group, required powerful allies.

"The Ruiz Group," Mateo said, trying to buy time. "They’re funding you, aren't they? Alejandro Ruiz has been trying to destroy me for a decade. He promised you a share of the company once you deliver the Jalisco lands."

"Fifty percent, to be exact," Valeria purred. "Along with a seat on the board and a brand new life in Madrid. I spent eight years playing the doting, supportive wife to a man who smells like agave juice and dirt. I deserved a real prize, Mateo. And now, I’m going to get it."

She cocked the revolver. The metallic click echoed like a death knell in the small room.

"But I’m a businesswoman," Valeria continued, her eyes glittering. "I prefer clean transactions. You are going to sign the final authorization of transfer for the European contracts over to the Ruiz holding company. Do it, and I’ll let your mother live out her remaining days in a very comfortable, private sanatorium in Switzerland. Refuse... and both of you die today, and I’ll simply forge your signature on the probate documents. It will take longer, but the result will be the same."

Mateo looked at the vial in his hand, then at the gun. He knew Valeria was a psychopath, but he also knew she was greedy. If he died now, she would face a messy legal battle with his estate executors. She wanted a clean, legal transition of wealth.

He needed to play her game. He needed to make her believe she had won, while he set a trap of his own.

"Fine," Mateo said, slowly lowering his hands. "I’ll sign. But I want to see the contract first. And I want my mother moved to a private clinic of my choice immediately."

Valeria’s smile widened, victorious and cruel. "I knew you were a smart businessman, Mateo. The papers are in the safe downstairs. We’ll sign them tonight at the charity gala. Yes... the grand Polanco Charity Gala. It’s the perfect stage. You will announce your retirement due to 'personal family health crises,' hand over the reins to me, and we will say our final goodbyes to the high society."

She lowered the gun slightly, but her eyes remained sharp. "Don't try anything foolish, Mateo. I have men stationed outside your mother’s door. One wrong move, one whisper to the staff, and she doesn't survive the night."
