Chapter 4 - The Gala of Deception

The grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Polanco was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and the whispers of Mexico City’s elite. Over five hundred guests—politicians, CEOs, diplomats, and socialites—had gathered for the annual "Esperanza Foundation" charity gala, ironically named by Valeria to project an image of ultimate filial devotion.
Valeria was in her element. She wore a stunning, backless emerald green gown that accentuated her perfect figure, her neck adorned with a million-dollar diamond necklace. She floated through the crowd, laughing, sipping champagne, and receiving endless praise for her philanthropic work.
"You look beautiful, my love," she whispered to Mateo, who stood beside her in a classic tuxedo. Her hand was wrapped tightly around his arm, but Mateo could feel the cold metal of a compact pistol she had concealed in her silk evening clutch, pressed directly against his ribs.
"Where is my mother, Valeria?" Mateo whispered through a forced smile as they posed for a group of flashing press cameras.
"She is in the VIP holding suite upstairs, resting comfortably under the supervision of 'Dr. Alanis' and two of our private security guards," Valeria replied smoothly, nodding to a passing senator. "Once the contracts are signed in the private office upstairs after your speech, she will be transported to the airport. Her flight to Switzerland is booked."
Mateo’s heart hammered against his ribs. He had spent the last six hours secretly coordinating with his few remaining loyal allies. He had managed to get a message out to Don Chente’s son, who was a high-ranking officer in the federal police, but he had no idea if the rescue plan was in place. He was flying blind, playing a high-stakes game of poker with his mother’s life on the line.
At 9:00 PM, the master of ceremonies took the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the announcer’s voice boomed. "Please welcome the CEO of Mezcal Del Sol, and our host for tonight, Mateo Ramirez!"
The ballroom erupted into applause. Valeria gave Mateo a sweet, encouraging kiss on the cheek, whispering in his ear, "Make it perfect, Mateo. Remember, your mother is watching on a live feed upstairs. Keep her alive."
Mateo walked up the steps to the stage, the bright stage lights blinding him. He stood before the microphone, looking out at the sea of wealthy, oblivious faces. In the front row sat Alejandro Ruiz, the CEO of the Ruiz Group, wearing a smug, triumphant grin.
Mateo took a deep breath.
"Good evening, everyone," Mateo began, his voice strong and clear. "Thank you for being here tonight to support the Esperanza Foundation. As many of you know, this foundation was named after my mother—a woman who taught me that true wealth is not measured in bank accounts, but in honor, sacrifice, and the love of family."
The crowd murmured in appreciation. Valeria smiled warmly from the side of the stage.
"But tonight, I am not here to talk about business," Mateo continued, his tone shifting, becoming darker, more intense. "I am here to make a confession. For years, I have been blind. I have been so obsessed with building an empire, with expanding into Europe, that I failed to see the rot inside my own home. I failed to see that the person I trusted most... was a monster."
A sudden, tense silence fell over the ballroom. The whispers died down.
Valeria’s smile froze. Her hand slowly drifted toward her silk clutch.

"Mateo, what are you doing?" Valeria hissed from the wings, her voice barely audible to the crowd but filled with deadly promise.
"I am here to announce that I am not retiring," Mateo projected his voice, staring directly at Alejandro Ruiz. "And I am not signing over my mother's lands. Because tonight, the mask comes off."
