Chapter 2 - A Billionaire’s Invitation Cannot Be DeclinedThe air in the kitchen dropped twenty degrees.

Camila felt her spine lock into place, every nerve ending screaming a warning as Lorenzo closed the distance between them. The heavy clack of his leather-soled shoes against the tiled floor echoed like gunshots in the silent room.

When he reached her station, he didn't stop until he was standing less than a foot away. The scent of him—expensive cedarwood, ozone, and a faint, sharp trace of antiseptic—overwhelmed the sweet smell of baking sugar and vanilla.

“You didn’t listen,” Lorenzo said. His voice was a low rumble, pitched exclusively for her ears, yet it carried an authority that made the sous-chef ten feet away shrink back.

“Excuse me?” Camila managed, gripping the edge of the marble counter so hard her knuckles turned white. She forced her chin up, refusing to cower, even as her heart hammered violently against her ribs. “Sir, this is a commercial kitchen. You can’t just walk back here—”

“I go where I want, Camila,” he interrupted smoothly, his dark gaze dropping briefly to her lips before tracking back to her eyes. “And I told you last night not to leave alone.”

“I went straight home,” she fired back, a spark of defensive anger overriding her terror. “I locked my door, I went to sleep, and I woke up to go to work. Just like a normal person. You don’t get to dictate my schedule.”

A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of Lorenzo’s mouth—not a warm smile, but the expression of a man who found a stubborn obstacle deeply amusing.

“Normal people don't interest me,” he said softly. He reached out with his uninjured hand, his long fingers hovering just a millimeter above her flour-dusted wrist before pulling back as if he had forced himself to exercise immense restraint. “Get your coat.”

“What?” Camila’s jaw dropped. “Are you out of your mind? I have a shift. I have orders to finish for a wedding tasting tomorrow morning, and—”

“Your shift is over,” Lorenzo said, turning slightly to signal the man with the scar near his ear—the one standing guard by the flour bins. “Vince has already cleared it with your manager. Sterling & Co. has been bought out for the afternoon. All of you have the rest of the day off.”

Across the kitchen, the operations manager—a man who usually treated the staff like replaceable cogs—scuttled forward, sweating profusely, nodding frantically. “Yes, Ms. Williams! Everything is... everything is taken care of. Please, go ahead.”

Camila stared at her boss in absolute betrayal before glaring back at Lorenzo. “You bought a catering company just to clear the room?”

“I bought it so we could talk in peace,” Lorenzo corrected smoothly. He reached down, picked up a fresh orange from her prep basket, and rolled it slowly between his palms. “Car or restaurant? Choose.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” she said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts. “I have plans. I have a life. I have—”

“Aiden,” a voice interrupted sharply from the doorway.

Camila turned to see Aiden stepping out from the back hallway, his expression a mix of confusion and rising protective anger. He took in the armed guards, the terrified kitchen staff, and the towering, dangerous stranger standing inches from Camila.

“Hey,” Aiden said, his voice hard as he crossed the floor, stepping directly between Camila and Lorenzo. He wasn't as tall as the mafia boss, but he held his ground, glaring up at the older man. “Whatever kind of game you’re playing here, pal, she said no. Step away from her.”

For one heart-stopping second, time froze.

The bodyguards’ hands twitched toward their jackets. The air grew so thick with tension it felt impossible to inhale.

Lorenzo didn't blink. He slowly turned his head, looking Aiden up and down with the clinical detachment of a executioner evaluating a stray dog.

“You’re the one,” Lorenzo said quietly. It wasn't a question.

Aiden frowned, shifting his weight. “I’m her coworker. Now back off before I call the police.”

A dry, humorless chuckle escaped Lorenzo’s throat. He stepped forward—not toward Aiden, but toward Camila, reaching out and gently taking her hand before she could pull away. He turned her palm upward, pressing a small, heavy brass key embossed with a stylized ‘M’ directly into her skin, folding her fingers over it.

“Tell your boyfriend,” Lorenzo whispered, his eyes locked onto Camila’s wide, terrified gaze, “that he’s playing a very dangerous game with things he doesn’t understand.”

Then, without another word, Lorenzo turned on his heel and walked out, his guards falling into step behind him like shadows.
