Chapter 8 - The Syndicate’s UltimatumThe underground bunker beneath the estate was a stark contrast to the luxurious opulence of the upper floors. Lit by harsh fluorescent panels and lined with reinforced concrete and digital monitoring screens, it hummed with the constant, high-pitched whine of servers and communication relays.

Aiden Gallagher sat strapped to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room. His face was bruised, his nose swollen, and the easy, charming smile was completely gone, replaced by a terrified, hollow shell of a man.
Lorenzo walked into the room like an executioner entering a tomb, Camila trailing nervously a few paces behind him. Vince stood off to the side, holding a secure laptop displaying a live intercept feed.
“The boy finally started talking, Boss,” Vince said, stepping forward. “He wasn't just working for the Russos. He was a double agent compromised by a higher player inside the Chicago political machine—District Attorney Vance.”
Camila gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “District Attorney Vance? But... he’s running for mayor! He’s the keynote speaker at half the charity galas Sterling & Co. caters!”
“Vance has been laundering syndicate money through high-end hospitality fronts for five years,” Lorenzo explained coldly, walking slowly around Aiden’s chair like a shark circling a wounded seal. He looked down at the cowering man. “And Vance wanted my territory. So he sent his favorite little pet to get close to the best pastry chef in the city, knowing that if I ever took an interest in her, she’d become my Achilles' heel.”
Aiden raised his head, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, and gave a weak, pathetic laugh. “You... you think you’ve won, Moretti? You think keeping her here makes her safe?”
Lorenzo’s hand shot out, grabbing Aiden by the collar of his ruined shirt and hauling him upright with terrifying strength.
“Where is she?” Lorenzo demanded, his voice a low, lethal growl.
“She’s already gone,” Aiden choked out, coughing up a drop of blood. “While you were bringing her here... while you were playing house in your little stone castle... Vance’s men didn't hit the estate. They hit the warehouse in the West Loop. They took your primary ledger, your supply chains, and...”
Aiden’s eyes flickered toward Camila with a cruel, malicious glint. “...they took your head baker's assistant, Chloe. And they left a message for you, Moretti. A trade.”
Lorenzo released his grip so violently Aiden slumped back into the chair, gasping for air.
“What trade?” Lorenzo asked.
“Chloe’s life... and Camila’s freedom,” Aiden whispered, grinning through his bloodied teeth. “Tomorrow night, at the old disused rail yards by the harbor. You walk in alone, unarmed, and hand over the port authority shipping rights... or they execute your people one by one.”
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Camila felt the room spin. Chloe? Sweet, bubbly Chloe, who helped her frost wedding cakes every Saturday morning, had been taken because of her? Because of Lorenzo?

She looked up at Lorenzo, expecting to see hesitation, calculation, or fear.
Instead, she saw something terrifying. A cold, absolute void of emotion that signaled a man who had decided to burn the world to ash to protect what was his.
