Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn"Mrs. Lorraine Vance," Marcus said crisply, flashing an official federal cyber-crime investigator badge. "And Ms. Brooke Vance. You are both hereby served with a formal notice of asset seizure, financial fraud investigation, and grand larceny indictment."

Lorraine’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. She spun around, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus, then at me. "This is a setup! We committed no crime! I managed these accounts legally under the power of attorney granted to me by my son!"

"Power of attorney does not grant legal immunity for systemic embezzlement, tax fraud, and malicious financial abuse," Marcus replied calmly, opening his metal briefcase and pulling out thick stacks of printed forensic accounting logs. "According to our digital audits of account #4829, over the past six years, you systematically diverted $214,500 intended for family maintenance and mortgage payments into private offshore holdings and luxury expenditures for personal enrichment."

"That's a lie!" Brooke screamed, tears of rage springing to her eyes. "He gave us that money! He wanted us to have it!"

"Did he?" Marcus raised an eyebrow, tapping a document on the table. "Because our forensic software cross-referenced every single bank transfer with Daniel Vance's original employment contracts and text logs. Furthermore, we have discovered three separate forged wire transfers executed just last month while Mr. Vance was unreachable in the New Mexico desert—transfers designed to strip his personal retirement funds dry."

The two police officers stepped forward, flanking Lorraine and Brooke. One of them rested his hand casually on his holster.

"Mrs. Vance, I suggest you do not resist," the officer said firmly. "We have a signed warrant from a federal magistrate authorizing the immediate freezing of all secondary accounts tied to your social security numbers."

Lorraine looked at me, her mask of cold authority finally shattering completely. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, venomous hatred. She lunged forward, her nails clawing toward my face, but the police officer intercepted her instantly, grabbing her wrists and pinning her arms behind her back with a sharp click of handcuffs.

"You ungrateful, miserable little parasite!" Lorraine shrieked, spitting venom as she was hauled backward. "After everything I did for you! Raising you, managing your life, keeping you from turning into nothing! And you throw your own mother to the wolves for a dying whore?!"

My expression didn't change by a single micro-expression. I stepped closer to her, my voice quiet, cold, and razor-sharp.

"You didn't raise me, Lorraine. You used me. You treated me like an ATM machine and my wife like a slave in her own home. You watched her starve, you denied her medical care, and you laughed while she sold her own hair to buy a biopsy for cancer."

Lorraine stopped struggling for a split second, her eyes flickering with sudden panic. "She... she told you that?"

"She didn't have to," I said softly. "The house security cameras captured audio of every single word you said to her while I was away. Every threat. Every insult. Every time you locked her in that freezing storage room."

Brooke began to sob hysterically as the second officer clicked handcuffs around her wrists. "Mom! Do something! Make him stop!"

"There is nothing left to make stop, Brooke," I said, turning my back on them as the officers escorted them toward the front door. "The house is mine. The cars are mine. The accounts are frozen. And your new life of luxury built on my wife's suffering is officially over."

As the heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, an immense, suffocating weight lifted off my chest. But the victory felt hollow.

Because downstairs, in a dark, concrete-walled storage room, Natalie was still fighting for her life.
