Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm in ManhattanThe morning sun over Manhattan offered no warmth, only a harsh, glaring light that seemed to expose every crack in the concrete. Inside the penthouse office overlooking the sprawling skyline, Gabriel Moretti stood motionless. His dark suit was immaculate, his silver-streaked hair styled with absolute precision, but his eyes were fixed on the phone in his hand as if it were a live grenade.

"Repeat that," Gabriel said. His voice was not loud. In the underworld of New York, a loud boss was a weak boss. Gabriel’s voice dropped to a register that made his most hardened capos sweat.

On the other end, the director of St. Catherine’s Medical Center swallowed hard. "Mr. Moretti, the SUV was broadsided on Forty-Third Avenue in Queens. The driver, your head detail man Vincent, didn't survive. But Sophie... Sophie was pulled from the wreckage by a civilian. She’s in recovery now. She’s stable, sir."

Gabriel didn't ask how. He didn't ask who. His mind, trained over two decades of rising to the top of the city’s syndicate through cold calculation and absolute ruthlessness, instantly calculated the variables.

An accident? Or a hit?

Vincent was one of his best. A man who could spot a tail in a hailstorm. For someone to take him out at a blind intersection in Queens meant they knew his route. They knew Sophie was in the back.

"Who pulled her out?" Gabriel asked, his knuckles white around the phone.

"We don't know, Mr. Moretti," the director admitted, panic bleeding into his tone. "She vanished before dawn. She gave a pint of O-negative blood—saved the child's life—and walked out without signing a single intake form. All security has is a blurry frame from the ER hallway: a heavy-set woman in a torn, blood-stained factory uniform, brown hair, exhausted eyes."

Gabriel hung up without saying goodbye.

He turned to face his second-in-command, a scarred, quiet giant named Marcus, who stood by the reinforced steel door.

"Get every cleaner, every informant, and every asset we have in Queens moving," Gabriel commanded, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, icy fury. "Find the woman in the factory uniform. If she saved my daughter, she’s a saint. But if she was part of the setup..." Gabriel paused, his jaw tightening. "Find her before I burn half of Queens to the ground to do it myself."
