Chapter 4 - The Man in the Charcoal SuitEmma’s fingers hovered over the deadbolt. Her mind raced through a dozen terrifying possibilities. Had the delivery truck driver’s insurance company tracked her down? Had she broken some obscure hospital protocol by leaving?

She twisted the lock and pulled the door open just a few inches, kept secure by a heavy brass chain.

Standing in the dim, flickering hallway light was a man in his late forties. He possessed a striking, dangerous elegance—sharp jawline, piercing dark eyes that seemed to strip away her defenses in a single glance, and an aura of absolute power that filled the narrow stairwell. Behind him, two massive men in dark coats stood like stone statues, blocking both ends of the hall.

"You're... you're from the hospital?" Emma asked, her voice tight with suspicion.

The man looked down at her bandaged knuckles, then slowly met her eyes. A subtle shift occurred in his expression—not softness, but a deep, dangerous intensity.

"The hospital didn't send me," he said softly. "I am Gabriel Moretti."

The name struck Emma like a physical blow.

Even tucked away in her quiet corner of Queens, everyone in New York knew who Gabriel Moretti was. Whispered about in corner stores and highlighted on evening news specials, he was the untouchable architect of the city’s shipping and financial networks—and the man whispered to control every dock, warehouse, and union from Brooklyn to the Bronx. The underworld king.

Emma instinctively stepped back, her hand flying to her throat. "I... I didn't mean to get involved. I just saw a child—"

"A child who is alive because of you," Gabriel interrupted, his voice dropping an octave as he gently pushed the door open. The heavy brass chain snapped with a sharp crack, the screws pulling straight out of the rotting wooden frame as if it were made of paper.

Gabriel stepped inside her apartment, bringing the scent of expensive cologne, rain, and cold authority with him.
