Chapter 10 - THE FINAL GAVELThe courtroom of Manhattan Supreme Court was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of my heels against the polished marble floor as I approached the plaintiff’s table.

Sitting across the aisle at the defense table was Grant’s new court-appointed public defender, looking overwhelmed and exhausted, while Grant himself sat in the gallery row—isolated, gray, and forgotten. He didn't look at me as I passed. He kept his eyes fixed on the floor, a ghost haunting the halls of the very courthouse where he once ruled as an untouchable titan.
Judge Althouse adjusted his glasses from the bench, looking down over his mahogany desk with a familiar, respectful nod.
“Counselor Mercer,” the judge said. “Are we ready to proceed with the final asset distribution hearing in Mercer v. Mercer?”
“Ready, Your Honor,” I replied, my voice ringing clear and strong through the vaulted courtroom, echoing off the stone walls.
I opened my leather portfolio, laying out the final accounting statements that documented every single dollar recovered, every hidden asset dismantled, and every fraudulent transfer reversed.
I looked back once toward the gallery. Grant was staring at his hands—empty, trembling hands that had tried to grasp everything and ended up holding nothing at all.
I turned my attention back to the bench, lifted my fountain pen, and prepared to deliver the final blow.
Some men spend their lives building empires on lies, believing they are the architects of their own destiny. But they forget a fundamental truth of the law—and of life:
Every lie leaves a paper trail. Every secret has a price. And a woman who knows the truth is the most dangerous force on earth.
