Chapter 9 - THE NEW EMPIRESix months later, the golden autumn sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my brand-new corner office on the 52nd floor of one of Midtown’s most prestigious commercial towers.

On the door, freshly etched in frosted glass, read the words: VANCE & ASSOCIATES: MATRIMONIAL LITIGATION & ASSET RECOVERY.
I wasn't an associate at someone else’s firm anymore. I was the founding name partner of my own boutique litigation practice—specializing exclusively in high-net-worth asset tracing, fraudulent conveyance, and exposing the hidden financial betrayals of powerful men who thought they were untouchable.
My phone chimed on the mahogany desk.
I looked down at the screen. A text message from an unknown number.
Elena. Please. I’m working out of a small office in Queens. I can barely afford rent. Lila left me when the money ran out. Can we talk? Just coffee.
I stared at the screen for three seconds.
Then, with a calm, indifferent flick of my thumb, I pressed BLOCK NUMBER.
There was no anger left in me. Just the clean, crisp satisfaction of absolute justice.
The heavy oak office door opened softly, and my executive assistant stepped inside, holding a thick leather-bound client file.
“Elena, your two o’clock is here,” she said. “It’s the wife of a senior hedge fund manager. She suspects her husband is hiding assets in the Caymans.”
I looked down at my desk, where a framed photograph sat beside my laptop. It wasn't a wedding photo. It was a recent, vibrant polaroid of me holding my healthy, beautiful newborn daughter, both of us smiling brightly into the camera, surrounded by light and infinite possibility.

I closed my laptop, stood up, and smoothed the lapels of my tailored navy suit.
“Send her in,” I said, a confident smile touching my lips. “Let’s go find her money.”
