Chapter 8 - Empire of White and Black

Six months later.

The rain was falling again over Manhattan, drumming a steady, comforting rhythm against the reinforced glass windows of the Vance penthouse.

Inside, the massive white rug was no longer covered in dusty, abandoned toys. Instead, colorful building blocks were scattered everywhere, surrounding a small, wooden table where a four-year-old girl was busy coloring pictures of cats and laundry machines with pink crayons.

At the head of the mahogany desk, Dante Vance sat reviewing international shipping manifests. But for the first time in his life, the door to his study was wide open.

From down the hall came the rhythmic, comforting hum of an industrial steam iron.

Norah Hale walked into the study, carrying a freshly pressed black Italian wool coat over her arm. Her hair was tied back in a loose knot, and she wore a simple silk blouse instead of her old faded blue work apron. Though, hanging right beside the door was a brand-new apron embroidered with gold silk thread: Head of Household.

“Your dry cleaning is ready, Mr. Vance,” Norah said playfully, tossing the coat over the back of his chair.

Dante caught it, but instead of looking at the fabric, his pale gray eyes locked onto hers with a warm, possessive devotion that no rival syndicate could ever break. He stood up, walked around the desk, and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

“You know,” Dante murmured, burying his face in her neck, “Bellamy Wash & Fold is still up for sale. I was thinking of buying it. Turning it into a museum.”

Norah laughed, resting her hands against his shoulders. “Don’t you dare. Where else would I go when I need to escape your impossible ego?”

From the living room area, a small voice called out:

“Mama! Daddy! Look at my drawing!”

Dante and Norah exchanged a knowing smile.

The most feared mafia boss in New York didn't reach for his gun. He simply took Norah’s hand, intertwined his fingers with hers, and walked out into the light of his restored home—where the laundry was finally clean, the blood was washed away, and the ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest.
