Chapter 4 - THE FEDS ENTER THE CHATBy 8:00 AM the next morning, the lobby of Carter Financial Group looked like a crime scene.

Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountants, flanked by armed marshals, marched through the polished marble revolving doors carrying industrial-sized server boxes. News vans choked the street, broadcasting live as corporate executives were led out in handcuffs.

Evan Carter sat in his top-floor executive corner office, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the circus below.

The heavy mahogany door swung open without a knock.

It wasn't an agent. It was Amelia.

She wore a sharp, charcoal-gray pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot. She walked across the plush Persian rug and placed a thick manila folder directly on top of Evan’s expensive leather desk blotter.

Evan didn't look up. His voice was hollow, stripped of all its former arrogance.

"How did you get past security?" he asked, his hands shaking as he poured amber liquid into a crystal tumbler.

"Your head of security is currently cooperating with federal investigators in exchange for a reduced sentence," Amelia answered, taking a seat opposite him without being invited. "He gave me his visitor pass. Efficiency runs in my family, Evan."

Evan slammed the glass down, finally looking at her. His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with dark circles of sheer panic. "You’re ruining everything I built. Ten years of work, my reputation, my mother’s name—gone overnight because you couldn't just play your part!"

"My part?" Amelia's eyes narrowed, flashing with a dangerous intensity. "Your part was being a husband. Your choice was being a monster who thought he could rewrite reality."

She tapped the manila folder.

"Do you know what's in here, Evan? It’s not just the domestic abuse logs from the smart-home server. It’s the forensic audit of your corporate accounts. You embezzled forty million dollars from pension funds to pay off offshore debts and fund Chloe’s lifestyle. The federal sentencing guidelines for white-collar securities fraud plus domestic intimidation carry a minimum of twenty-five years."

Evan’s face twisted into a mask of pure fury. He lunged across the desk, his hands clawing toward her throat. "I'll kill you! I swear to God, I'll—"

Click. Click.

Two federal agents stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, their tasers instantly leveled at Evan’s chest.

"Mr. Carter, keep your hands where we can see them," the lead agent said, stepping forward and snapping steel handcuffs onto Evan’s wrists with practiced efficiency.

As they dragged him toward the private elevator, Evan screamed back over his shoulder, his voice echoing down the marble hallway:

"You think you've won, Amelia! My mother will tear you apart! You don't know what my family has buried!"

Amelia stood up, straightened her jacket, and watched the elevator doors close on her husband.

She thought she would feel triumphant. Instead, a cold knot formed in her stomach.

“You don't know what my family has buried.”

Evan wasn't just talking about money. He was talking about something much darker.
