Chapter 8 - THE FINAL DIAGNOSISThree months later, Courtroom 302 was packed to maximum capacity for the final dissolution and criminal sentencing hearing.

The gallery was a sea of reporters, legal experts, and public observers.
Evan Carter sat at the defense table in a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair unstyled, his arrogant charm completely eroded. Beside him, his high-priced defense counsel sat in stunned silence, having submitted no further motions to contest the overwhelming mountain of forensic, digital, and financial evidence.
Judge Vance sat tall on the bench, reviewing the final consolidated sentencing memorandum.
"Mr. Carter," Judge Vance said, his voice deep and uncompromising. "You have been convicted on twelve counts of corporate fraud, witness intimidation, spousal abuse, and obstruction of justice, with federal prosecutors pursuing additional indictments regarding historical homicide cover-ups tied to your estate. Do you have anything to say before sentence is passed?"
Evan slowly stood up. He didn't look at his mother, who sat in the front row weeping silently. He looked across the courtroom directly at Amelia, who stood at the prosecution table with her briefcase resting open.
"I gave her everything," Evan muttered, his voice cracking into a bitter whisper. "I made her a queen. And she tore it all down just to prove she was smarter than me."
"You didn't make me anything, Evan," Amelia said, stepping forward without a trace of fear or hesitation in her voice. "I was a doctor before I met you. I was a scientist before you tried to erase me. The only thing you ever made was a series of fatal forensic mistakes."
Judge Vance dropped his gavel with a resounding strike that shook the courtroom.
"Evan Carter, I sentence you to forty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, all remaining assets of the Carter estate are hereby seized and transferred to a victim restitution fund, led by the Clara Vance Foundation for Forensic Justice."
The gavel struck one final time.
Bang.
The trial was over.
As the bailiffs led Evan away in heavy steel chains, he cast one final, venomous look back at his ex-wife. But Amelia didn't flinch. She simply looked down at her left shoulder—where the fading scars of his abuse still lingered—and gently buttoned her coat.
