Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the grand ballroom grew quiet, Adrian, Margaret, Lucia, and I walked out onto the private balcony overlooking the glittering Boston harbor.
The cold night air carried the scent of the ocean, crisp and full of possibility.
Lucia leaned against the balustrade, looking up at the bright winter stars with wide, dreamy eyes.
“Grandma,” Lucia asked, tilting her head toward Margaret. “Will you teach me another dance tomorrow?”
Margaret laughed softly, wrapping her arms around my daughter and pulling her close. “I’ll teach you all the ones your great-great-grandfather tried to hide, my little star.”
Adrian stepped up beside me, slipping his arm around my waist. He handed me a glass of champagne—real champagne this time, not served on a silver platter to strangers, but shared as an equal among family.
