Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupThe morning sun cast a sharp, blinding light across the forty-fifth floor of Vale Tower.

The executive boardroom was a masterpiece of modern architecture—floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Boston harbor, a massive mahogany conference table that could seat twenty people, and an atmosphere so tense you could cut it with a knife.

Seated around the table were the senior executives, board members, and major shareholders of Vale Enterprises. Most of them had spent their entire careers bowing to Adrian or whispering behind closed doors about corporate power plays.

Today, however, all eyes were fixed on the head of the table.

On me.

I wasn't wearing a server’s uniform anymore. A tailor had spent the early hours of the morning fitting me into a sharp, charcoal-gray bespoke pantsuit that commanded respect without trying too hard. My hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, and my posture was completely upright.

Adrian sat to my right, observing the room with a look of quiet satisfaction. Margaret sat to my left, her presence lending an undeniable, untouchable legitimacy to my seat at the table.

At the far end of the room sat Richard Winthrop—Celeste’s father.

His face was flushed a violent shade of red, his hands clenched into tight fists on top of the mahogany table. He had spent the last ten minutes listening to reports of his daughter’s catastrophic social implosion, and now he was directing all of his boiling rage at me.

“This is an outrage!” Richard barked, slamming his hand against the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers. “Some nobody walks in off the street claiming a bloodline because she knows a lullaby, and you’re letting her sit at the head of the table? Adrian, have you lost your mind? We have institutional investors watching every move we make! We can’t just hand over board seats to a glorified waitress!”

The silence in the room was absolute. Several board members shifted uncomfortably, waiting to see how the young billionaire would react to the challenge.

Adrian didn’t even blink. He simply turned his head toward me and gestured lazily with his hand, as if inviting a guest to speak at a dinner party.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. The acoustic perfection of the boardroom carried every single word across the room with chilling clarity.

“Mr. Winthrop,” I began, my voice steady and composed. “You talk about investors. You talk about stability. Yet your daughter thought it was appropriate to use a multi-million-dollar corporate charity gala as her personal playground to bully a six-year-old child.”

“Celeste was just having fun!” Richard snarled, his voice rising in desperation. “It was a joke! A harmless prank! You’re blowing this out of proportion because your feelings were hurt!”

“A harmless prank,” I repeated quietly.

I opened the leather-bound portfolio sitting in front of me, sliding a single printed document across the polished wood toward him.

Richard looked down at it. As his eyes scanned the text, the fiery anger on his face instantly drained, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror.

“What... what is this?” he stammered, his hands beginning to shake.

“That,” I said, looking him dead in the eye, “is an audit of your division over the last three years. Unauthorized asset transfers, shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, and systematic embezzlement of funds meant for community development programs.”

Richard shot out of his chair so fast his leather executive chair crashed backward onto the floor with a loud thud.

“You’re lying!” he screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me. “You’re fabricating documents! You can’t do this!”

“I haven't even started,” I replied coldly, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. “That audit was compiled by Adrian’s forensic accountants last night at my specific request. And as the newly verified holder of thirty-five percent voting shares in Vale Enterprises—thanks to the bloc transferred to me by my grandmother this morning—I am exercising my first official executive power.”

I paused, letting the silence stretch out until every person in the room was holding their breath.

“Richard Winthrop, you are stripped of your title as Senior Vice President, effective immediately. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building. Same as your daughter.”
