Chapter 17 - The Shadow at the DoorFor six months, our lives were nothing short of a miracle.

The biotech firm Elena ran was scaling rapidly, her cardiology research was saving lives across the country, and Marrow Holdings was reporting record-breaking quarters under my restructured leadership. Most importantly, the penthouse in Tribeca was filled with the chaotic, beautiful laughter of two little boys who had finally learned to call me "Daddy" without hesitation.

We had healed. The wounds of the past three years had scabbed over, replaced by a profound, unbreakable bond.

Until a rainy Thursday evening in April.

I was working late in my home office when the building's private intercom buzzed sharply.

I frowned, glancing at the wall clock. It was 9:45 PM. We weren't expecting any deliveries, and Richard Vance knew better than to disturb my family this late unless it was a global emergency.

I pressed the receiver. "Marrow."

"Mr. Marrow," the lobby security guard's voice crackled through the speaker, sounding nervous and uneasy. "I'm sorry to bother you so late, but... there's a woman downstairs insisting on seeing Mrs. Marrow. She says she's an old family friend from Boston."

A cold knot formed in my stomach. "Did she give a name?"

"She said her name is Clara Vance."

The blood rushed out of my face. Clara Vance. Julian’s estranged, manipulative mother—a woman who had spent decades weaponizing high society gossip to ruin corporate rivals.

Before I could answer, the lobby guard gasped, followed by the sound of scuffling over the intercom.

"Ma'am, you can't go up there! Mr. Marrow didn't authorize—"

A sharp click cut the guard off.
