Chapter 3 - THE EVICTION NOTICE THAT SHOCKED THE NEIGHBORHOOD

I didn't sleep that night. I spent the hours in my bedroom, listening to them whispering in the kitchen below. I could hear their voices, agitated, frantic. They knew.

By dawn, I had made my decision. I wasn't going to be the victim who faded away into the upstairs room.

At 8:00 AM, there was a knock on the front door. It wasn't my neighbor. It was a process server, holding a thick envelope.

When I opened the door, Daniel was coming down the stairs, already dressed for work. He saw the man, then saw me.

"What is this, Mom?" he demanded, his voice echoing.

"It's an eviction notice," I said, my hands trembling only slightly. "I’ve filed for a formal removal. You have thirty days to vacate this premises. And Daniel? I’ve locked the equity account. The bank is already investigating the fraudulent charges."

Melissa screamed. It was a high, shrill sound. "You can't do this! We have nowhere to go! You’re heartless!"

"Heartless?" I felt a laugh bubble up in my chest—a sharp, hysterical sound. "I gave you three years. I gave you my savings. I gave you my peace. And in return, you tried to steal my future."

Daniel lunged forward, grabbing my arm. "You think you can just kick us out? This is our home now! You’re a widow who needs us!"

"I'm a woman who owns her home," I corrected, pulling away. "And I’m a woman who is calling the police if you touch me again."

The neighbors were starting to peek out their windows. The shame of it—the public spectacle—was something I would have avoided at all costs a week ago. But today? I welcomed it. Let them see. Let the whole world see the son I raised and the woman he chose.
