Chapter 6 - THE SILENCE OF THE SANCTUARY

The next day, it was quiet.
At 12:05 PM, the sheriff had come and gone. The last SUV had driven away, leaving tire marks on my driveway.
The house was empty. It felt hollow, echoing with the absence of the people who had tried to consume it.
I walked through the rooms. They had left a mess—stains on the carpet, holes in the walls from where they had hung their tacky art, the kitchen a disaster zone of half-packed boxes and discarded trash.
But as I touched the walls, I felt something else. I felt the house reclaiming itself.
I started at the front door. I took down the "live, laugh, love" sign Melissa had insisted on putting up. I replaced it with the old, hand-carved sign Frank had made that said 'The Patterson Home.'
I went to the living room and threw out the modern sofa. I called the charity shop and had them haul it away. Then, I went to the storage unit where I had hidden Frank's armchair, his books, and his favorite photos—all the things I had been forced to "put away" to make space for them.
By nightfall, the living room looked like it had in 2010.
I made a pot of tea. The real kind—the kind Frank liked. I sat in his chair and drank it in the silence.
For the first time in years, there were no strangers in my living room. There was no one telling me to go upstairs. There was no one siphoning my life away.

I was alone.
And it was the most beautiful thing I had ever felt.
