Chapter 4 - THE DIGITAL NOOSEMariana’s fingers flew across Julián’s smartphone screen with cold, surgical precision. The shock had completely vanished, replaced by the lethal clarity of a professional auditor finding the smoking gun in a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme.

—He thinks he’s untouchable because he uses encrypted offshore channels for the shell company—Mariana muttered, her eyes reflecting the blue light of the screen—. But amateur criminals always make one fatal mistake: they link their primary cloud storage to their personal mobile device for convenience.

—Can you lock him out?—Ernesto asked, leaning against the counter, watching his daughter with a look of fierce, unadulterated pride.

—Lock him out? Dad, I’m going to lock down his entire corporate existence before he even realizes his car keys aren't broken—Mariana replied, tapping a final sequence into the phone.

With a few rapid taps, she exported the entire chat history, financial spreadsheets, forged signatures, and voice memos directly to her own secure cloud drive, setting an automated trigger: If not manually decrypted within 12 hours, send copies to the Federal Attorney General's Office, the State Anti-Corruption Unit, and all major financial institutions in Mexico City.

Next, she accessed Julián’s banking portal via his saved browser credentials.

—His main operating account for Administración Patrimonial is tied to a local credit union here in Querétaro—she murmured, her lips curling into a sharp smile—. He deposited the advance from our house sale this morning. Fifty thousand dollars in liquid cash.

—Can you freeze it?—Ernesto asked.

—Better. I’m executing an emergency corporate restructuring maneuver using his own administrative credentials. Under Mexican corporate law, a primary shareholder can initiate a freezing hold if internal fraud is detected by an authorized auditor. Since I’m officially listed as a secondary minority shareholder on one of his older legitimate properties, the system accepts my digital signature override.

A green checkmark flashed across the screen.

ACCOUNT FROZEN. TRANSFER BLOCKED. SYSTEM LOCK ENGAGED.

—Done—Mariana whispered.

Just as the confirmation banner faded, heavy footsteps echoed back down the hallway.

Julián was returning from the driveway.

—The sensor’s fine! The damn car was just sitting there mocking me—Julián’s voice boomed as he pushed the kitchen door open, shaking his head with an annoyed chuckle—. Must need a software update. Anyway, where were we? Ah, yes. The future of this family.

Julián stepped back into the kitchen, rubbing his hands together. He walked straight toward the table, completely unaware that in the span of three minutes, his entire financial empire had been dismantled, his bank accounts frozen, and his criminal dossier forwarded to federal authorities.

He sat back down in his chair, picking up his coffee mug—the very mug he had laced with liquid sedatives just moments before.

—So, Don Ernesto—Julián smiled, leaning forward across the parota wood table—. Are we ready to sign, or do we need to discuss the nursing home option again?
