Chapter 6 - THE TRAP CLOSESFor three long seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the muted drone of the soccer commentator on the living room television.

Julián stared at the glowing screen, his eyes darting across the frozen account balances, the downloaded chat transcripts, the forged medical evaluation certificates, and the automated federal routing receipts. His breathing turned ragged, shallow, and fast. The slick, confident real estate agent facade dissolved entirely, exposing a cornered, desperate animal.
—This... this is a mistake—Julián stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine as he tried to claw the phone off the table—. This is a glitch. Some kind of systemic error. Mariana, you don't understand—people high up, dangerous people, they helped set up this trust. If these files get sent out—
—They've already been sent out, Julián—Mariana interrupted, her voice as cold as winter stone. She tapped the screen, displaying a live transmission log: Cloud Backup Transmitted to Federal Prosecutor’s Office (Time stamp: 20:44 PM)—. The moment you poured that chemical into my father's cup, your digital footprint locked into our system. The backup is already sitting in three different federal servers. Even if you smash this phone right now, it won't change a thing.
Julián lunged across the table, his hands clawing wildly toward the phone to grab it, but Ernesto was faster.
With a speed that belied his 66 years, Ernesto slammed his heavy hand down over the device, pinning it to the wood, while his other hand gripped the collar of Julián’s expensive designer shirt with the grip of an industrial vice.
—Sit down, you rat—Ernesto growled, his face inches from Julián’s sweating forehead.
—Let me go! You don't know who you're dealing with! Those guys in Mexico City—they’ll kill you! They’ll tear this house down to the foundations!—Julián shrieked, thrashing wildly in the chair, trying to pull away.
—Let them try—Ernesto said calmly—. I spent forty years wiring high-voltage industrial grids. I know how to handle shorts. And you? You're just a loose wire about to be grounded permanently.
Mariana walked over to the front hallway. She picked up her own coat, handbag, and car keys, then reached for the front door deadbolt.
—Where are you going?—Julián cried out, panic seizing his chest as he realized his entire life was collapsing in real-time—. Mariana! We’ve been married for twelve years! You can't do this to me! Think about our life!
Mariana turned back, looking at the man she had loved and trusted for over a decade. There was no grief left in her heart—only a profound, liberating emptiness.
—I am thinking about our life, Julián—she said quietly—. Specifically, the part where you spend the next twenty years behind bars reflecting on your real estate portfolio.

She pulled the heavy wooden door open.
Standing on the porch, illuminated by the orange streetlights of Querétaro, were two armed state police officers, accompanied by a federal digital forensics inspector.
