Chapter 10 - A Prescription for Tomorrow

The rain had stopped by the time my taxi dropped me off at the entrance of the city’s premier medical center. The air was crisp, washed clean by the afternoon shower, smelling of wet asphalt and blooming spring magnolias.

I took the private elevator straight up to the executive suite on the twelfth floor. The waiting room was empty, quiet, and bathed in natural light pouring through floor-to-ceiling glass panes.

On my mahogany desk sat a thick, leather-bound folder bearing the final, notarized seal of the Sinclair Foundation Restructuring Board. As of 12:01 PM today, I wasn't just Dr. Kirsten Sinclair, pediatric surgeon and department lead. I was the sole chairperson and majority trustee of one of the largest philanthropic medical endowments in the country.

My phone buzzed against the marble tabletop.

It was a text message from Julian: Ground floor. Coffee, pastries, and zero federal subpoenas. Are you coming down or do I have to send SWAT to extract you?

A genuine smile touched the corners of my lips—not the small, controlled mask I had worn to deflect Connor’s cruelty in the hospital lobby weeks ago, but a wide, unguarded smile that reached all the way to my eyes.

I locked my office door behind me, slid my badge into my pocket, and pressed the down arrow for the elevator.

As the doors slid open to reveal Julian leaning casually against the polished interior wall—holding two cups of dark roast and looking up with that quiet, unwavering intensity that made my pulse hitch—I stepped inside.

The doors closed smoothly, sealing away the past, the sterile examination rooms, the phantom grief, and the bitter echoes of a life I had outgrown. My hands were steady. My path was clear. And for the first time in my life, the future belonged entirely to me.
