Chapter 6 - THE SURGICAL EXTRACTIONThe air in the makeshift operating room smelled of ozone, copper, and sterile saline.

Dr. Henderson’s brow was slick with sweat as he adjusted the high-intensity headlamp, focusing a brilliant beam of white light onto Anna’s exposed abdomen. Beside him, the portable ultrasound monitor hissed softly, displaying the pulsing, erratic heartbeat of the fetus alongside the glowing, sinister matrix of the synthetic node.

"Scalpel," Henderson murmured without looking up.

Marcus handed him the precision laser instrument. "How much time do we have?"

"Not enough," Henderson replied, his hand moving with terrifying precision as he made a clean, horizontal incision along the lower uterine wall. "The drone’s primary backup will have triggered an alert at Mitchell headquarters by now. They’ll be tracing our power signature."

As the incision parted the layers of tissue, a thin stream of warm amniotic fluid released, pooling around the sterile drapes. Henderson’s fingers slipped inside the opening, guided entirely by the real-time ultrasound imaging on the screen.

"I see the anchor point," Henderson said, his breath hitching. "The fiber-optic threads are woven directly into the Wharton’s jelly of the umbilical cord. If I sever the wrong strand..."

"Do it carefully, doc," Marcus hissed, keeping one eye on the heavy steel door down the hall.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic CLANG echoed through the corridor outside.

Marcus froze, raising his weapon. "Someone just breached the outer bulkhead."

"Keep them out!" Henderson barked, not breaking his concentration for a split second. His fingers twitched inside the surgical incision. "I’m right at the node's core capacitor. One false move and it will detonate a localized electrical charge."

Down the hall, heavy combat boots slammed against the concrete floor. Shouted orders bounced off the limestone walls—cold, clipped military terminology.

"Sector four is clear! Sweep the lower level!"

A heavy boot kicked against the exterior door of the Radiology wing.

BANG!

The reinforced steel door shuddered in its frame, the heavy deadbolt groaning under the impact.

"Marcus! Now!" Henderson shouted, gripping the micro-forceps with white-knuckled intensity.

Marcus raised his pistol, aiming squarely at the center of the steel door as a second, heavier blow smashed the frame inward, splintering the wood and cracking the industrial hinges.

Through the widening gap stepped a tall, imposing figure in a tactical turtleneck and dark armored vest. It wasn't Aaron. It was Commander Vance—head of the Mitchell Foundation’s private security enforcement division.

And right behind him, stepping smoothly over the ruined frame with an expression of absolute, glacial fury, was Dr. Aaron Mitchell.
