Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE DARK"End of the line, Marcus," Aaron said, his voice smooth, calm, and utterly devoid of human warmth as he stepped into the flickering light of the radiology room. His white coat was gone, replaced by a dark cashmere sweater, but his hands were tucked neatly into his pockets like a man strolling through a hospital ward.

Marcus’s finger tightened on the trigger of his pistol, aiming directly at Aaron’s chest. "Take one more step, Aaron, and I’ll put a bullet through your heart."

Aaron didn't even blink. He looked past Marcus, his eyes fixing entirely on the operating table where Dr. Henderson stood frozen with his hands buried inside Anna’s open surgical incision.

"Dr. Henderson," Aaron sighed, shaking his head with mock disappointment. "I thought the board revoked your medical license for senility back in twenty-twenty-four. Stealing biological assets from the Mitchell Foundation is a federal felony carrying a mandatory life sentence without parole."

"You're harvesting human lives, Aaron," Henderson spat back, not moving an inch away from the table. "You and your mother are monsters wearing white coats."

"We are the architects of human evolution," Aaron corrected smoothly, taking a slow step forward despite the gun barrel pointed at his face. "Do you honestly think a backwoods journalist and a discredited geriatric can stop a multi-billion-dollar medical paradigm shift? The child belongs to the Foundation. The moment that node is integrated, humanity takes its next great leap forward."

"Over my dead body," Marcus growled.

"That can easily be arranged," Commander Vance said, raising a heavily silenced assault rifle and leveling it squarely at Marcus’s head.

Aaron smiled—that same terrifying, charming smile Anna had trusted three years ago when she said I do.

"Step away from the table, Marcus. Drop the weapon, and perhaps I’ll let your little journalist friend live to write his pathetic little blog about how the world changed without his permission."

Marcus’s jaw clenched. His eyes flicked from Commander Vance to Aaron, calculating the odds in a fraction of a second. The gun barrel wavered slightly.

"Do it, Marcus," Henderson whispered quietly, his fingers still holding the microscopic forceps deep inside the uterine tissue. "Buy me three more seconds."

Marcus lowered his pistol an inch, as if considering surrender.

Aaron’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. "I said, drop it completely—"

That was all the time Henderson needed.

With a lightning-fast twist of his wrist, Henderson snapped the micro-forceps upward, tearing the glowing, spider-like synthetic node free from its moorings in the placental wall with a sickening squelch.

"Got it!" Henderson shouted.

A blinding flash of blue electric light erupted from the excised node as its internal capacitors short-circuited in the open air, filling the room with the smell of scorched ozone and burning copper.

"SHOOT THEM!" Aaron shrieked, his composure shattering instantly into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

Commander Vance pulled the trigger.
