CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER POOR

The silence became unbearable.
The receptionist's face turned white.
One stylist accidentally dropped her scissors.
Another quietly hid the video she had been recording to mock the old man online.
The elderly gentleman stood up.
Gone was the trembling.
Gone was the weak posture.
He suddenly carried himself like someone accustomed to boardrooms worth millions.
"My name," he said calmly,
"is William Ashcroft."
The room collectively gasped.
Everyone knew the name.
Ashcroft Beauty Group.
Over four hundred luxury salons.
A billion-dollar brand.
Every employee had seen his portrait hanging inside headquarters.
But the photograph had been taken fifteen years earlier.
No one expected the aging man standing before them to be the same legendary founder.
The receptionist immediately forced a smile.
"Mr. Ashcroft... I... I didn't recognize you."
"I know."
She laughed nervously.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
William looked directly into her eyes.
"I came exactly as I wanted to be seen."
He removed a tiny button from inside his jacket.
It wasn't a button.
It was a hidden camera.
The receptionist nearly collapsed.
"For six months," William continued,
"I've visited twenty-seven of my salons dressed exactly like this."
Every employee stared.
"I wanted to know something my executives could never tell me."
He looked around the room.
"Who respects people... before knowing their bank account."
One by one...
he called employees by name.
He quoted conversations they thought no customer had heard.
He described complaints hidden from management.
He knew which stylists bullied trainees.
Which managers stole commissions.
Which employees secretly gave free haircuts to cancer patients after closing hours.
Nothing had escaped him.
Then William turned toward Ethan.
"You are the only person today who treated me like a human being."
Ethan lowered his eyes.
"I was just doing my job."
William smiled.
"No."
"You did something much rarer."
"You showed kindness when it cost you something."
Everyone expected Ethan to receive a bonus.
Instead...
William asked one shocking question.
"Ethan...
would you be willing to run this salon?"
The room exploded.
The current manager shouted,
"He's only been here two years!"
Another stylist yelled,
"He isn't qualified!"
William simply replied,
"Leadership isn't measured by years."
"It's measured by character."
The receptionist suddenly burst into tears.
"Please... give me another chance."
William stared at her for several seconds.

Then quietly asked,
"How many chances did you give the people you humiliated?"
