Chapter 3 - The Morning After the FallBy sunrise, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant Virginia morning. In my private recovery suite on the third floor, I fed my baby daughter while reviewing encrypted status reports on my secure tablet.

My phone buzzed against the bedside table. It was a notification from my lead estate attorney, Harrison Vance.

“Colonel Langley, final signature protocols for the Langley Trust are verified and locked as of 0600 hours. All twenty million is officially transferred and fully distributed under your exclusive control. Congratulations on both accounts—the estate and the new arrival.”

I smiled, locking the screen. Twenty million dollars. Real estate holdings in Manhattan and Palm Beach, prime commercial acreage in Northern Virginia, and liquid assets that could buy and sell Grant’s entire corporate firm three times over.

Meanwhile, Grant was likely waking up in our suburban house, enjoying his coffee, completely oblivious to the fact that his wife—whom he had so casually cast out as "dead weight"—was now a multi-millionaire military commander.

Around 10:00 AM, the door to my hospital room creaked open.

I expected a nurse coming in to check my vitals. Instead, stepping across the threshold was a tall, sharply dressed woman with bleached blonde hair, heavy designer sunglasses pushed up onto her head, and a smug, triumphant smirk painted across her face.

Behind her walked Grant Holloway.

Grant looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, but there was a jittery, reckless energy in his eyes. He walked in like a conquering hero returning to claim the spoils of war.

I didn't move. I simply held my sleeping daughter closer to my chest, my eyes narrowing as I watched the two of them approach my bed.
