Chapter 8 - A New DawnThe room grew quiet once more. General Vance remained standing near the window, looking out over the verdant hills of Virginia where the morning sun was now shining in full, glorious splendor.

"Well executed, Colonel," General Vance said, turning with a respectful nod. "A textbook operation from start to finish."

"Thank you, General," I replied, smiling gently as my daughter stirred in her sleep, letting out a soft, contented sigh. "Just securing the perimeter."

"The Joint Chiefs have approved your request for extended maternity leave," General Vance continued, stepping closer to the bed and looking down at the baby with a rare, gentle smile. "Though knowing you, you'll probably be reviewing encrypted satellite intel by tomorrow afternoon."

"Give me at least forty-eight hours, General," I joked softly.

He chuckled, offering a crisp nod before turning and walking out of the room, leaving me in peaceful solitude with my child.
