Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master Unmasked

"You're a very nosey caregiver, Mara," Viktor said, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of the loyalty he had displayed the night before.
Mara backed up against the humming server racks, her hand subtly reaching behind her back to grab a heavy network cable. "It was you. You leaked the blueprints. You set up the ambush at the mansion."
Viktor laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Dante is a brilliant strategist, but he became weak the moment that bomb failed to kill him. A paralyzed king cannot rule Bellador. The other families are circling like vultures. We needed a strong leader. I arranged the bomb, but that damn brother of yours ruined everything by keeping him alive."
"Owen was a hero," Mara spat, tears of rage blinding her.
"Owen was collateral damage," Viktor corrected coldly. "Just like you’re about to be. I’ll make it look like a tragic accident. A robbery gone wrong in the bad part of town. Dante will grieve, and then I will finally put him out of his misery."
Viktor raised the gun, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Click.
The sound didn't come from Viktor’s gun. It came from the intercom speaker on the wall.
"You always did talk too much, Viktor," Dante’s voice boomed through the speaker, cold as the grave.
Viktor blinked in shock. In that split second of distraction, Mara lunged forward, whipping the heavy network cable across Viktor’s face. The metal connector struck his eye, and he screamed in pain, dropping the gun.
Mara didn't waste a breath. She grabbed the decryption drive from the server—which now read 100% Complete—and bolted past him into the hallway.
"Catch her!" Viktor roared into his radio, stumbling out of the room, clutching his bleeding face.
Mara ran down the corporate stairwell, her lungs burning. She could hear the heavy boots of Viktor’s rogue guards echoing from the floors below. She was trapped. She burst through the exit door into the underground parking garage, looking wildly for an escape.
Tires screeched.
A massive, armored black SUV tore around the corner, flipping onto two wheels before slamming to a halt right in front of her. The passenger door flew open.
Sitting in the modified driver’s seat, his hands controlling the manual steering mechanisms, was Dante Vale.

"Get in!" he roared.
Mara scrambled inside, throwing herself into the passenger seat just as a hail of bullets chipped the bulletproof glass. Dante slammed the SUV into reverse, spinning the massive vehicle around with expert precision, and accelerated out into the blinding daylight of Bellador.
