Chapter 6 - The King's Judgement

Viktor stumbled out onto the deck of the yacht, trapped. His guards were either down or had fled. He looked up at the crane cabin, then down at the asphalt where Dante Vale was rolling forward, his shotgun resting across his lap.
Mara climbed down from the crane, her hands shaking but her head held high, and took her place right beside Dante’s chair.
Viktor looked at the two of them—the paralyzed king and the chaotic caregiver who had brought his empire down. He raised his hands in surrender, a pathetic, desperate smile on his face.
"Dante... please," Viktor begged. "We’re brothers. We built this city together. I did it for the family. You were broken!"
"I was broken," Dante said, his voice echoing across the empty docks like a death knell. "But she reminded me that a king doesn't rule with his legs. He rules with his mind. And his wrath."
Dante raised the shotgun, pointing it directly at Viktor’s chest.
"Wait," Mara said softly, placing a gentle hand on Dante’s shoulder.
Viktor let out a sigh of relief. "Yes, listen to her! She’s a healer! She knows—"
"Don't waste the bullet," Mara interrupted coldly, staring directly into Viktor’s eyes. "The decryption drive didn't just go to the council, Dante. While I was in the server room, I routed all of Viktor’s offshore bank accounts, his hit lists, and his betrayal logs directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Look up."
The distant, thudding roar of helicopter blades began to fill the night air. Searchlights pierced the darkness, illuminating the yacht in blinding white light. Sirens wailed in the distance, closing in from every direction.
"In twenty minutes, the feds will lock you in a maximum-security cage for the rest of your miserable life," Mara said to Viktor, her voice ringing with absolute satisfaction. "And in that prison, the Vale family can't protect you. You're going to spend every single day looking over your shoulder, waiting for the debt to be paid."
Viktor’s face drained of color as he realized his fate. Being arrested wasn't his salvation; it was a slow, agonizing death sentence in a place where he would have no power, no allies, and no escape.
Dante slowly lowered the shotgun, a dark, brilliant smirk spreading across his face. He looked up at Mara, his gray eyes no longer glacial, but burning with something intense and profound.
"You really are chaotic, Quinn," he murmured.
"I told you, Mr. Vale," Mara smiled, though a tear finally slipped down her cheek as she clutched Owen’s silver medal. "I save time."
Epilogue: A New ReignThree months later.
The Bellador syndicate had been completely restructured. With Viktor gone and the traitors purged, Dante’s rule was absolute, unchallenged, and conducted entirely from the shadows.
In the grand mansion, the broken chess king had been replaced by a pristine, custom-carved piece made of solid obsidian.
Dante sat in his study, looking at the medical charts. His physical therapy was brutal, but for the first time in eight months, he was making progress. He could feel his toes. He could twitch his calf muscles.
The door opened, and Mara walked in, carrying a tray of modern medical equipment. Her curls were still wild, her shoelaces were untied, and she completely ignored the heavy atmosphere of the room.
"Time for your exercises, Dante," she said, using his first name naturally now.
Dante smiled—a genuine, rare smile that only she ever saw. He reached down, picked up the obsidian chess king, and held it out to her.
"I have a new proposition for you, Mara," he said quietly.
"I'm your caregiver, Dante. I don't do mafia business," she replied, setting the tray down.
"Not a business proposition," Dante said, his voice dropping to a low, intense frequency as he took her hand, pulling her gently toward him. "I don't need a caregiver anymore. I need a queen. Someone to keep me grounded when I get too cold, and someone to unleash when the world needs a little chaos."
Mara looked down at him, her heart skipping a beat. She looked at the silver medal around her neck, then at the man who had helped her avenge her brother.
"On one condition," Mara said, a mischievous spark in her eyes.
"Name it."

"You actually have to listen to me when I tell you to take your medicine."
Dante laughed, a rich, warm sound that filled the massive mansion. "Deal."
