Chapter 9 - THE RETURN TO THE VALE ESTATEThe black SUV pulled through the iron gates of the Santa Barbara estate just as the sun was dipping below the Pacific, painting the sky in violent shades of purple and gold.

News of Victoria Shaw’s dramatic arrest at a private airstrip in Van Nuys had already flashed across the financial news networks, but inside the Vale mansion, no one was watching television.

Dr. Harrison met them at the grand front entrance, his stethoscope dangling from his neck, his expression a mix of shock and cautious disbelief.

"He... he’s awake," the doctor stammered, staring at Laura as she stepped out of the passenger seat. "His vitals stabilized ten minutes ago. It defies every medical law I know. He kept whispering a single word over and over: 'Is she here?'"

Laura didn't waste a second. She didn't drop her backpack in the foyer or wait for Celia’s permission. She walked straight past the imported chandeliers, past the museum-quality paintings, and pushed open the heavy oak door of the master bedroom.

Ernest Vale was propped up against his white linen pillows. His eyes, dull and lifeless just hours before, caught the warm light of the hallway.

When he saw Laura standing in the doorway with her canvas bag and practical shoes, the corners of his weathered mouth twitched upward.

"You're late," the old man rasped, his voice trembling with weak amusement. "The soup’s probably cold."

Laura walked over to the bed, set her bag on the floor, and reached out to adjust his blanket with a familiar, effortless gentleness.

"It’s never too cold to warm up," she smiled.

From the doorway, Robert watched them. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel like an untouchable executive trapped behind glass. He felt completely, wonderfully human.
