Chapter 5 - THE WRATH OF THE SHROUDMarcus stumbled backward, dropping his cigar as the unnatural wind howled through the ruined estate. The flames licking at the walls didn't flicker—they froze instantly into jagged sculptures of ice.

"What the hell is this?!" Marcus screamed, raising his pistol, but his hands were trembling so violently he could barely hold the weapon.

"It's the interest on your debt, Marcus," I said coldly.

From the swirling vortex of ash and frost, a tall, slender silhouette emerged. She wore a long, tattered black cloak that seemed to absorb the light around her. When she lowered her hood, my heart stopped entirely.

It was Elena.

Not a memory. Not a ghost conjured by grief. Her face was identical to the one I had buried three years ago—save for a faint, silver rune glowing across her left cheekbone, matching the exact pattern of the charm Isabella now clutched in her hand.

"Dante," she whispered. Her voice sounded like wind rustling through autumn leaves, echoing from everywhere and nowhere at once.

"Elena... you're dead. I buried you," I stammered, lowering my pistol as the sheer disbelief paralyzed my limbs.

"I was trapped, my love," she said, gliding across the frozen floor toward us without her feet ever touching the ground. "The Santoros didn't just assassinate me. They broke the ancient covenant, binding my soul to the threshold to keep the gateway closed. But our daughter—and the little one of the bloodline—woke the roots."

Marcus shrieked, firing three wild rounds directly into Elena’s chest. The bullets passed right through her translucent form as if she were made of smoke, shattering the wall behind her.

"Monster! Demon!" Marcus yelled, turning and sprinting toward the shattered front gates.

"You can't run from a debt paid in blood, Marcus," Elena said softly.

She raised a pale hand. The shadows stretching across the foyer floor suddenly detached themselves from the ground, morphing into long, clawed tendrils of darkness that lashed out, wrapping tightly around Marcus’s ankles and dragging him screaming back across the ruined marble floor.

He clawed at the floorboards, kicking and sobbing, until he was pulled directly to Elena’s feet.

"Please... please don't kill me!" Marcus wept, looking up at her with dilated, terror-stricken eyes.

"You betrayed my husband. You threatened my daughter," Elena said, her voice freezing the air around them into a crystalline cage. "And you broke the covenant."

With a single flick of her wrist, the shadows enveloped Marcus entirely. A muffled scream echoed, and when the darkness receded, Marcus Vance was gone—leaving behind only a pile of fine white ash that blew away in the indoor wind.

Elena turned her hauntingly beautiful eyes toward me. She stepped closer, lifting a cold, ethereal hand to touch my cheek.

"The war isn't over, Dante," she whispered. "The head of the Santoro cartel watched from the shadows. He knows Isabella can walk now. He knows the bloodline has awakened."

"Then I'll finish what I started three years ago," I said, grabbing her hand—feeling a sudden, burning jolt of electricity where our skin met. "I'll hunt Don Salvatore down to the last circle of hell."

"You won't have to," Elena replied, fading slowly back into the swirling mist as sirens wailed in the distance. "He’s already coming for the pier."
