Chapter 7 - THE INNER SANCTUMWe docked at the abandoned shipping warehouse at Pier 42, deep within the syndicate’s secure zone. My remaining loyal capos—thirty hardened men armed to the teeth—were waiting on the concrete apron, their vehicles idling with headlights blazing.

"Boss! Thank God you're alive," Vince, my veteran caporegime, stepped forward, offering me a fresh trench coat and an assault rifle. "We saw the smoke rising from the estate. We tried to mobilize, but our communications were jammed."

"Marcus sold us out," I said coldly, shrugging into the coat. "He’s dead. Clean up the estate, secure the perimeter, and move our core assets to the safehouse under St. Patrick’s Cathedral."

Vince nodded grimly, casting a wary glance at Sophia, who was carrying a sleeping Emma in her arms, while Isabella walked slowly beside me, her small hand firmly holding mine. Every step she took was stronger, more confident than the last.

"And the Santoros?" Vince asked.

"They're coming to us," I said. "Don Salvatore thinks he can finish what he started three years ago. Let's not disappoint him."

We loaded into a convoy of armored SUVs and drove straight into the heart of Manhattan, descending deep beneath the street grid into the old subterranean aqueducts that fed the city’s historic foundations.

Very few people knew that beneath St. Patrick’s Cathedral lay a vast, forgotten network of catacombs built during the 19th-century underground transit expansions—and that my syndicate had turned them into our ultimate redoubt.

We descended the spiral stone staircase into the grand vaulted chamber. Massive pillars of carved granite supported the ancient ceiling, illuminated by rows of old iron torches.

"Set Isabella down on the central altar," Sophia instructed gently, guiding my daughter toward a raised stone platform in the middle of the room. Carved into the stone was an intricate, circular mosaic of a silver tree with roots spreading out into infinity.

Isabella climbed onto the altar without hesitation. She sat cross-legged, placing the silver charm in the center of the mosaic.

Instantly, the silver charm began to glow with a brilliant, pulsing blue light. The lines of the mosaic carved into the stone lit up one by one, tracing a glowing web across the entire floor of the catacombs.

"What is happening?" Vince whispered, gripping his rifle as the walls began to vibrate.

"The seal is opening," Sophia said, her voice echoing off the stone vault. "Don Salvatore is already above us. He brought the blood-key."

Almost on cue, a deafening explosion echoed from the ceiling above us. Chunks of ancient mortar and stone rained down from the vaulted roof as heavy hydraulic drills began tearing through the concrete slab overhead.

The final battle for the empire had begun.
