Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup and the Midnight Intruder

Midnight arrived with a flash of lightning and a torrential downpour.
The DNA results sat in a sealed manila envelope on Ethan’s desk: 99.99% Biological Paternity Match. Ethan had glanced at it for half a second before tossing it aside. It was just paper confirming what his soul already knew.
Suddenly, the private security alarm on the eastern wing of the mansion chimed softly—a low, blinking amber light on the smart-home console in the hallway.
Ethan froze. He stood up from his desk, grabbing the heavy brass paperweight before moving silently toward the corridor.
Downstairs, the heavy French doors leading from the garden terrace had been forced open. Shards of glass glittered in the dim emergency lighting.
A figure in a dark trench coat crept through the shadows of the east parlor, moving directly toward the grand piano. It wasn't a burglar looking for silver or art. It was someone moving with calculated, vindictive malice.
"Don't move," Ethan’s voice cut through the darkness like a blade.
The figure spun around. A flash of lightning illuminated the face.
It wasn't Richard Haynes. It was Victoria Haynes.
She looked unhinged, her hair damp from the rain, her eyes wild and bloodshot, clutching a heavy silver candelabra she had grabbed from the dining room table.
"You ruined everything, Ethan!" Victoria shrieked, taking a wild step forward. "My family is a laughingstock! My father is facing ruin because of you and some cheap cleaning whore! I gave you four years! I gave you perfection!"
"You gave me a performance, Victoria," Ethan said, lowering his voice as he stepped closer, keeping himself between her and the hallway leading to the nursery. "Put the candelabra down before I have you arrested for breaking and entering."
"Arrested?" Victoria laughed hysterically, the sound echoing chillingly against the high ceilings. "I don't think so, Ethan. Do you know what I found in your car when I came back to retrieve my things this afternoon? Your personal safe combination was still set to your mother's birthday. I took the original merger restructuring documents. If you don't publicly announce that this whole thing was a tabloid hoax by tomorrow morning, I am leaking your company's proprietary asset transfers to the federal regulators. You'll lose everything."
Ethan didn't blink. He took another step forward, his eyes locked onto hers with terrifying calm.
"You think documents can destroy me, Victoria?" Ethan asked softly. "You don't understand. I spent my whole life building a fortress out of glass because I didn't have anything real to protect. But today, for the first time, I have something real."
Before Victoria could swing the heavy silver candelabra, a shadow materialized behind her from the dark parlor doorway.
It was Rosa.
In her hand, she held the heavy brass fireplace poker she had grabbed from the library. With a quick, decisive sweep, Rosa brought the heavy metal down against the base of the candelabra, knocking it out of Victoria's grip with a deafening crash that reverberated through the entire mansion.
Victoria screamed in shock, spinning around just as the main hallway lights flooded the room—triggered by the security system.

Standing in the doorway was the head of Ethan’s private security detail, flanked by two local police officers who had been patrolling the perimeter gates.
"Miss Haynes," the lead officer said, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. "You are placing yourself under arrest for felony breaking and entering, property damage, and extortion."
