Chapter 2 - THE FALL

The shove lasted less than a second.

But sometimes one second is enough to destroy an entire future.

Victoria would later insist she had barely touched Lily.

She would claim the girl had lost her balance.

She would say everyone had exaggerated what happened.

But marble floors don’t care about excuses.

And three-year-old children don’t know how to fall safely.

Lily slipped backward.

The piano bench shifted beneath her.

Her small body struck the cold marble floor.

For one horrible second, there was silence.

Then came the sound every parent fears.

Her cry.

---

Rosa heard it from upstairs.

And every instinct inside her changed instantly.

She was no longer an employee.

No longer a maid.

No longer a woman expected to remain quiet.

She was a mother.

And mothers don’t ask permission before protecting their children.

She raced down the staircase.

“Lily!”

At the exact same moment...

Ethan entered the room.

His keys slipped from his fingers.

They hit the marble with a sharp metallic sound.

Almost like a warning.

He looked at the little girl.

Then at Rosa.

Then back at Lily.

And his entire world seemed to stop.

Because the child crying on the floor...

Had his face.

His eyes.

His blood.

His daughter.

---

“How old is she?”

Ethan’s voice was barely more than a whisper.

Rosa froze.

She knew.

The moment she had feared for three years had finally arrived.

“Three.”

Her voice trembled.

“She turned three in August.”

Ethan calculated immediately.

The dates.

The timing.

His disappearance.

The years of silence.

Everything.

His expression changed.

“Rosa...”

A painful pause followed.

“Is she mine?”

The entire room went silent.

Even Victoria seemed to forget how to breathe.

Because everyone standing there suddenly understood the same thing.
