Chapter 6 - The Irony of FateTwo weeks later, the civil court proceedings began in Courtroom 4B of the downtown municipal building.

The room was packed with reporters, financial analysts, and curious onlookers eager to watch the total public disintegration of one of the city's most prominent corporate climbers.
Connor Fleming sat at the defendant's table wearing an orange jumpsuit, looking hollowed out, his expensive hair unstyled, his arrogant smirk replaced by a permanent, haunted scowl. His defense attorneys looked exhausted, whispering furiously among themselves as they shuffled through thousands of pages of audit reports provided by Kenneth Boyd’s forensic accounting team.
Across the aisle, Melinda sat alone in the public gallery. None of her friends from the country club were there. None of her high-society brunch partners answered her phone calls. She was entirely, utterly isolated, holding a small canvas diaper bag containing the few clothes she had left to her name.
I walked into the courtroom wearing a tailored charcoal-grey suit, my posture upright, my head held high. Kenneth walked beside me, carrying his signature leather briefcase.
As I took my seat at the plaintiff's table, Connor raised his head. His eyes locked onto mine across the narrow aisle. There was no defiance left in them. Just a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy.
He mouthed a single word: Please.
I turned my head away, refusing to give him even the satisfaction of my gaze.
Judge Robert Vance, a stern man with decades of bench experience, banged his gavel twice, bringing the courtroom to absolute silence.
"This court has reviewed the complete financial disclosures, the corporate shell audits, and the verified medical addendums regarding the fraudulent asset concealment and intentional psychological abuse perpetrated by the defendant, Mr. Connor Fleming," Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the chambers.
He looked down at Connor over his spectacles with undisguised contempt.
"Mr. Fleming, your attempts to systematically hide over four million dollars in marital assets, coupled with your deliberate perjury regarding your medical status during the 2024 dissolution proceedings, constitute severe violations of federal and civil law."
Connor flinched as the judge continued listing the penalties.
"All hidden corporate assets, real estate holdings, and offshore accounts are hereby ordered to be seized and transferred in full, unencumbered ownership to the plaintiff, Dr. Kirsten Sinclair. Furthermore, due to proven financial fraud and malicious defamation during the original proceedings, the original divorce settlement is officially annulled, and a retroactive penalty multiplier of three hundred percent is applied."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery.
Connor slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the reality of total financial ruin hit him like a physical blow. He wasn't just broke; he owed millions in restitution, taxes, and legal fees that he would spend the rest of his natural life trying to pay off from a prison cell.
