Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the House of Cards"No. Wait. Kirsten, please—just listen to me for one second!"

Melinda scrambled forward, abandoning the stroller entirely as the security guards pinned Connor’s arms to his sides. She grabbed the hem of my white coat, her fingers digging desperately into the fabric. Her mascara was running down her cheeks, turning her into a frantic, ruined caricature of the woman who used to sip champagne across from me at brunch.

"Get off her," Kenneth warned, stepping between Melinda and me.

"Kirsten, you don't understand how it happened," Melinda sobbed, shaking violently. "He trapped me! He told me you guys were already over, that you were cold, that you never loved him! He said you were a machine, not a wife!"

"And you believed him," I said, looking down at her with a detachment that seemed to terrify her more than my anger ever could. "You believed him so much that you moved into my house before my boxes were even unpacked. You took my seat at the table. You wore the jewelry he bought me with my own inherited savings."

"She knew!" Connor shouted, straining against the guards, veins popping out of his thick neck. "She knew about the money from day one! She helped me hide the corporate accounts so you wouldn't get a dime of the expansion capital! She's just as liable as I am, Kirsten! If I go down, she goes down with me!"

Melinda let out a piercing shriek, turning on Connor with her fingernails bared. "You lying bastard! You said the shell companies were completely clean! You told me Kirsten would never find out because she was too busy saving lives in the ER!"

The security guards had to physically separate the two of them as they began screaming and lunging at each other right there in the pediatric hallway.

A small crowd of nurses and visiting families watched in stunned disbelief. The illusion of the perfect, wealthy, untouchable family had shattered into a million jagged pieces in less than ten minutes.

Kenneth calmly slid the birth certificate and the financial audit back into his leather folder and zipped it shut.

"The fraud charges have already been filed with the District Attorney's office," Kenneth told me quietly, loud enough for Connor and Melinda to hear over their mutual screaming. "The asset freeze on all of his corporate and personal accounts went into effect at nine o'clock this morning. By noon, every credit card in his wallet will be declined."

Connor stopped struggling. He went completely limp in the guards' grip, staring at Kenneth with eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated horror.

"Declined?" Connor whispered. "What do you mean, declined? My company—my investors—"

"Your investors pulled out thirty minutes ago," Kenneth replied, checking his gold wristwatch with agonizing precision. "When my firm forwarded the federal tax evasion audit to their boardrooms. You're broke, Connor. And worse than that, you're looking at a federal indictment for wire fraud and perjury."

Melinda slid down the hospital wall, her knees giving out completely. She sat in the puddle of spilled baby formula, staring blankly at the polished linoleum floor, rocking back and forth as the full weight of what she had traded her life, her dignity, and her friendship for finally crashed down around her.

She had wanted my life. She had wanted my husband, my home, my status.

She had gotten all of it. And now she was sharing a jail cell-in-waiting with a man who would throw her under the bus the second the police lights flashed.
