Chapter 5 - The Price of AmbitionBy four o'clock that afternoon, the news had already swept through the upper echelons of the city’s medical and corporate circles like wildfire.

Connor Fleming’s empire collapses. Fleming Enterprises frozen amid federal fraud probe. Prominent local donor arrested at city hospital.
I sat at my desk in my private office on the fourth floor, sipping a cup of black coffee while reviewing the post-op charts for three pediatric heart bypass patients I had operated on earlier that morning. Every single one of them was stable. Every single one of mine and my team's hands had been steady.
A sharp knock sounded at my door.
"Come in," I said without looking up.
The door creaked open, and heavy, hesitant footsteps entered the room. I looked up to see Melinda standing there. She looked ten years older than she had that morning. Her designer jacket was stained with dried formula, her hair was unbrushed, and her eyes were swollen raw from hours of crying.
She looked like a ghost haunting a life she had stolen.
"Kirsten," she whispered, her voice cracking.
"You shouldn't be up here, Melinda," I said evenly, setting my pen down on the desk. "This is a restricted surgical ward. Security could have you removed."
"They took him," Melinda choked out, tears spilling over her eyelids again as she gripped the back of a visitor's chair for support. "The federal agents... they arrested him at the precinct. They froze our apartment, our bank accounts, everything. The landlord gave us forty-eight hours to get our things out of the penthouse."
I leaned back in my leather chair, folding my hands over my lab coat. "That sounds like a civil and legal matter between you, your partner, and the federal government. Why are you telling me?"
"Because you can stop it!" Melinda cried, taking a desperate step forward, her voice rising in panic. "Your lawyer... Kenneth Boyd... he's the one who handed the files to the D.A.! If you call him, if you tell him to back off, they’ll drop the co-conspirator charges against me! I can keep my custody of Leo! I can keep—"
"Keep what, Melinda?" I interrupted, my voice sharp enough to cut glass.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
"Keep the life you built on top of my ruined marriage?" I continued, standing up slowly from my desk. I walked around the mahogany wood until I was standing just a few feet away from her. "You sat at my kitchen island three years ago, drinking my wine, eating my food, telling me that Connor was a good man who just didn't understand my career. While you were texting him from my guest room."
Melinda opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her face twisted in agony.
"You didn't just steal a husband, Melinda," I said quietly, stepping closer. "You bought into a lie because you thought my life was a trophy you could inherit without paying the price. Well, now you're paying it. Every single cent, every single drop of humiliation, every single second of fear."

"I have a baby!" she screamed, the desperation finally breaking through her composure. "What am I supposed to do with a one-year-old child and no money, no home, no family willing to take me in?!"
"You do what I did seven years ago," I replied, my voice hard as iron. "You pick up the pieces, you look in the mirror, and you realize that you brought every single bit of it on yourself."
