CHAPTER 1: The Old Woman Everyone Pitied

The afternoon sun beat down on the crowded street corner where traffic crawled through the city. Among the noise and chaos stood a frail elderly woman beside several wooden crates filled with tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and onions.

Her gray hair was tied back in a loose bun. Her sweater was faded and worn. Her hands trembled as she arranged vegetables that looked surprisingly fresh.

Most people barely noticed her.

Then a patrol car stopped nearby.

Two police officers stepped out after receiving complaints about illegal street vendors operating without permits.

Officer Daniel approached carefully.

"Ma'am, do you know you're not allowed to sell here?" he asked politely.

The old woman lowered her eyes.

"I know, son."

Her voice sounded weak.

"But my boy is sick. Very sick. I have nobody else. These vegetables come from my own garden. I'm only trying to buy medicine."

Officer Daniel glanced at his partner, Officer Ryan.

The story tugged at both of them.

The woman looked harmless.

She looked desperate.

She looked like someone's grandmother struggling to survive.

"Normally we'd have to issue a citation," Ryan said.

The old woman immediately began apologizing.

"I'm sorry. Please don't take my vegetables. My son needs me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Daniel sighed.

He thought about his own mother.

"All right," he finally said.

"We'll let you go with a warning."

Relief instantly appeared on her face.

"Thank you. Thank you so much."

Something about her reaction seemed strange.

Almost too relieved.

As if she had narrowly escaped something far worse than a fine.

The officers turned to leave.

Then Daniel smiled.

"Actually, we'll buy a few tomatoes before we go."

The old woman's face suddenly changed.

"No!"

The word escaped her mouth so quickly that even she seemed surprised.

Daniel stopped.

"No?"

"You don't need them," she said nervously.

"I have plenty of customers."

Ryan looked around.

The street was nearly empty.

"No customers here."

"They came earlier."

Her answer arrived too quickly.

Her fingers gripped the edge of the crate.

Sweat appeared on her forehead despite the mild weather.

Daniel's instincts began whispering.

Something wasn't right.

Years of police work had taught him to trust that feeling.

He crouched beside the crate.

The old woman's breathing became faster.

"Please don't touch them."

Now Daniel was certain.

He picked up a tomato.

And everything changed.

The tomato felt strangely heavy.

Far heavier than any normal tomato should.

Daniel's expression hardened.

Slowly, he pulled a small knife from his utility belt.

The old woman's face turned white.

One careful slice.

The tomato split open.

Instead of seeds and pulp...

A plastic package wrapped in waterproof tape fell into his hand.

Officer Ryan stared in disbelief.

Daniel immediately stood up.

"Arrest her."

The old woman tried to run.

But it was already too late.

May you like

Because hidden inside every vegetable was something worth millions.

And she wasn't an innocent grandmother at all.
