Chapter 3 - The Matriarch’s Wrath and the Interrogation RoomRyan froze, the phone slipping from his damp palm and clattering against the nursery floor. He recognized that voice instantly. It was his mother.

Slowly, his legs trembling like jelly, Ryan stepped out of the nursery and walked down the hall.

Elena was standing in the center of the living room. She had taken off her designer coat, revealing a sharp, black blazer that made her look like an executioner. Her eyes were fixed on him with a look of pure, unadulterated venom—a look no mother should ever direct toward her only son.

"Mom?" Ryan stammered, forcing a nervous, trembling laugh as he tried to regain his footing. "Thank God you're here. Look, something crazy happened—Clara and the baby are gone, the house is a mess, I think there was a break-in or—"

Crack!

The sound of Elena’s open palm connecting across Ryan’s cheek echoed through the silent house like a gunshot.

Ryan staggered sideways, clutching his stinging face, his eyes wide with shock. "Mom! What the hell was that for?!"

"Shut your lying mouth!" Elena roared, her voice shaking with a rage so intense it felt physical. "A break-in? Is that the pathetic lie you're going to spin to save your own skin? You arrogant, narcissistic monster!"

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Ryan yelled back, panic bleeding into his tone as he backed away from her. "I was in Aspen! I was celebrating my birthday with the guys! How am I supposed to know what happened here?!"

"Oh, I know exactly where you were, Ryan," Elena hissed, taking a slow, menacing step toward him. "I tracked your social media posts. While you were posting videos of yourself chugging whiskey on a luxury balcony in Aspen, laughing it up with your worthless friends... Clara was lying paralyzed on this exact floor for seventy-two straight hours."

Ryan’s breath hitched. "She... she was just exaggerating! She wanted to ruin my trip! Women do that, they pull dramatics—"

"She suffered a massive postpartum stroke combined with severe septic shock from a retained placenta!" Elena screamed, cutting him off with a force that made him flinch. "She begged you to take her to the hospital before you left. She told you she couldn't stand. And you told her to take an aspirin and called her dramatic!"

The blood drained entirely from Ryan’s face. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself against the edge of the sofa.

"How... how do you know that?" he whispered, his voice trembling violently.

"Because I checked your home security camera logs, you idiot," Elena sneered, pulling a small tablet from her handbag and shoving the screen right into his face.

The video loaded. It played audio from the morning Ryan left for Aspen.

“Take an aspirin,” Ryan’s voice boomed from the speaker, cold and dismissive. “Don't call me unless the house is on fire.”

Then, the video showed the front door slamming shut. A few seconds later, the camera captured my legs giving out, my body collapsing hard onto the nursery floor, followed by three days of agonizing, uninterrupted silence, broken only by Ethan’s weakening cries.

"The police have the full footage, Ryan," Elena said softly, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. "The hospital called Child Protective Services and the District Attorney as soon as Clara was admitted. They are already drafting an arrest warrant for criminal negligence and abandonment."

Ryan stared at the screen in absolute horror. The realization hit him like a freight train: his career, his reputation, his freedom—everything he had spent his entire life building—was about to crumble into dust.

"Mom... you have to help me," Ryan sobbed, lunging forward to grab her blazer. "You can't let them do this! I'm your son! We can fix this, we can tell the police it was a misunderstanding—"

Elena slowly looked down at his hands clutching her jacket, then raised her eyes to meet his.

"My son died the day he became a coward," Elena said, ripping her jacket from his grip with absolute disgust. "And as for your wife and your child... you will never see them again. Not as long as you draw breath."
