Chapter 8 - The Midnight Trap at the MarinaThe fog rolling off Puget Sound was thick, heavy, and freezing, wrapping around the wooden pilings of the old downtown marina like icy fingers.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I stepped out of Elena’s black SUV, pulling my wool coat tightly around my shoulders. I was still recovering from a massive medical trauma, but adrenaline and maternal fury were coursing through my veins like liquid fire.

"Clara, this is insane. We should have waited for the police tactical unit," Elena whispered from the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were stark white. "Ryan is setting a trap."

"I know it's a trap," I said, opening my coat to reveal the small, tactical police wire Marcus Vance had insisted I wear beneath my sweater. "And the police backup team is stationed three hundred yards down the pier in unmarked cruisers with thermal scopes. But I need to look him in the eye and watch him hand over that bag."

"Be careful," Elena choked out, tears shining in her eyes. "Ethan and I need you."

"I'll be back in ten minutes," I promised, closing the car door.

I walked down the creaking wooden planks of the pier, the cold wind whipping my hair across my face. The orange glow of the distant harbor lights cast long, distorted shadows across the wet wood.

At the very end of the pier, standing beside a rusted mooring post, was a lone figure silhouette against the fog.

It was Ryan.

He was wearing his expensive designer coat, holding a familiar black canvas medical bag in his right hand. As I approached, he turned around, a slow, arrogant smirk spreading across his face.

"Well, well, well," Ryan chuckled darkly, taking a step toward me. "I knew you didn't have the stomach to let your precious little life get ruined by a prison sentence. You came alone."

"Hand over the bag, Ryan," I said, my voice steady, cutting through the wind like a razor. "The game is over. The police already have your text messages, your extortion threats, and your accomplice on tape."

Ryan threw his head back and laughed—a harsh, unhinged sound that echoed across the dark water.

"The police?" He sneered, stepping closer. "Clara, you really are naive. You think a few text messages are going to put me away? That bag contains your exact prescription medication. All I have to do is tell the cops I found it hidden in your nursery, and you look like the unstable addict who neglected her child because of postpartum psychosis!"

"You're delusional," I said, taking a step back as he closed the distance between us. "You left me to die on a floor for three days, Ryan. No court in the country is going to believe a word you say."

"They'll believe me when your mother’s fortune is sitting safely in my offshore account!" Ryan snapped, his mask of calm slipping away to reveal the raging, desperate monster underneath. He lunged forward, grabbing my arm with a crushing grip. "Give me the signature, Clara! Sign the transfer documents right now, or I swear to God I'll throw this medical bag into the ocean where nobody will ever find it!"

"Let go of her, Ryan!"

A sharp, commanding voice boomed through the fog.

From the shadows behind the bait shop, four police officers in tactical gear emerged instantly, their flashlights blindingly bright, weapons drawn and pointed straight at Ryan's chest.

"Seattle Police! Drop the bag and put your hands behind your back right now!"
