Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Grace’s hand flew to her mouth to stifle a scream. Her eyes darted from the door to the futon where Maya lay sleeping, completely oblivious to the danger mounting outside their thin apartment walls.

"Grace," Michael’s voice came through the door. It wasn't the gentle, warm tone he had used at the hospital. It was tight, strained, and carried the undeniable weight of a man who was used to being obeyed. "Open the door. We need to talk. It's about your husband."

"Go away!" Grace yelled, her voice trembling as she backed toward the kitchen counter, her hand wrapping around the handle of a heavy cast-iron skillet. "I've called the police! They're on their way!"

"No, you haven't," Michael said quietly, his voice dangerously close to the wood. "Because your phone line was disconnected thirty seconds ago by my security team. Grace, listen to me. You are in extreme danger. The people who called you... they aren't trying to protect you. They are the ones who took Evan."

How did he know about the call? Grace’s mind raced. He’s wiretapping my phone. He's tracking me.

"I don't believe you!" Grace screamed. "You're the CEO! You authorized those pediatric trials! You're trying to cover up what you did to those kids!"

A heavy sigh echoed from the other side of the door.

"Gregory," Michael said, addressing one of the men behind him. "Break the lock. We don't have time for this."

CRACK!

The cheap deadbolt shattered under the pressure of the bolt cutters, and the door burst open.

Grace raised the skillet, her eyes wide with terror as Michael stepped into the small apartment. The two men in tactical gear remained in the hallway, their eyes scanning the stairs.

"Get out!" Grace shrieked, taking a defensive stance in front of the futon. "Don't touch my daughter!"

Michael didn't move toward her. Instead, he slowly raised his hands, his expression a mix of exhaustion and profound sorrow. "Grace, look at me. If I wanted to hurt you or Maya, would I have given her the correct, safe medicine at the hospital? Would I have personally verified the batch numbers?"

"You... you were setting me up," Grace stammered, her grip on the skillet loosening just a fraction. "The woman on the phone said Evan had the logs. She said your new drug causes hearing loss."

"The drug does cause hearing loss," Michael said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But I didn't authorize it. My board of directors did—specifically, my Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Sterling, and your ex-husband, Evan."

Grace’s world tilted. "Evan? No... Evan wouldn't do that. He loved children. He loved Maya."

"Evan was paid four million dollars to falsify the safety data," Michael said, pulling a tablet from his pocket and displaying a series of encrypted bank transfer records. "He did it because he was deeply in debt to some very dangerous offshore investors. When I discovered the discrepancies in the data three days ago, I ordered the trials shut down immediately. That’s when Evan vanished. He didn't run away from you, Grace. He ran away with the money."

Michael stepped closer, his dark eyes burning with a fierce, protective light. "The people who called you... they don't want the truth to come out because they are the ones who funded the drug. They think Evan gave you the backup drive before he left. They are coming here tonight to clean up their mess. And that means leaving no witnesses."

Before Grace could process the devastating truth about her husband, a red dot of a laser sight painted itself across the front of Michael's shirt.

It was coming from the window.

"Down!" Michael roared, lunging forward and tackling Grace to the floor just as the living room window shattered into a million glittering pieces.

HOOK FOR NEXT CHAPTER:

A hail of suppressed gunfire tore through the apartment, shredding the kitchen cabinets and sending plaster raining down on them. Michael held Grace down, his body shielding her as he reached for a concealed weapon in his waistband. But amidst the chaos, a loud, terrified scream echoed from the futon. The shooters weren't just targeting Michael—one of the tactical operatives had smashed through the fire escape window and was currently lifting a crying Maya into the freezing night air.
