Chapter 4 - The Fire Escape Chase

The sound of shattering glass was deafening, followed instantly by the cold, biting wind of the January blizzard rushing into the ruined apartment.
"Maya!" Grace shrieked, her maternal instincts overriding any sense of self-preservation. She tried to scramble out from under Michael, her fingers clawing at the cheap carpet.
Michael held her down for one more second as a spray of bullets pulverized the drywall above their heads. "Stay low! I'll get her!"
He rolled to his left, pulling a sleek, matte-black pistol from his waistband. He didn't fire blindly; he was disciplined, his eyes tracking the shadow moving across the fire escape.
The operative who had grabbed Maya was struggling. The little girl was fighting with a wild, feral strength, kicking her small boots into his chest and screaming for her mother. "Mama! Mama! Help me!"
"Let her go!" Michael roared, springing to his feet and firing three rapid shots through the broken window frame.
The operative grunted as one of the rounds caught him in the shoulder. He stumbled backward onto the icy metal grating of the fire escape, dropping Maya.
"Maya, run to Mommy!" Michael yelled.
But the operative, despite his injury, reached out and grabbed Maya's coat collar, dragging her toward the ladder that led down to the dark alleyway below.
Grace didn't wait. She bolted through the shattered window, heedless of the jagged glass that sliced through her jeans and into her shins. The freezing air hit her face like a physical blow, but she didn't feel it. She only saw her daughter’s terrified blue eyes.
"No!" Grace screamed, throwing her body over the metal railing of the fire escape and grabbing the operative’s wrist. She bit down on his gloved hand with everything she had, her teeth sinking deep into the flesh.
The man let out a cursed grunt and released Maya to strike Grace across the face.
The force of the blow sent Grace sprawling onto the icy metal stairs, her vision turning black at the edges. But her distraction had worked.
Michael was already there. He vaulted over the railing, his large frame slamming into the operative with the force of a freight train. The two men tumbled down the half-flight of stairs, crashing into the metal landing below in a flurry of fists and heavy boots.
"Grace! Take the girl and get to the car!" Michael shouted as he blocked a punch from the operative. "Go!"
Grace scrambled up, her face throbbing, her hands raw and bleeding. She grabbed Maya, pulling the sobbing three-year-old into her arms. "I've got you, baby. I've got you."
She ran down the opposite side of the fire escape, her boots slipping on the black ice. Below, in the alley, one of Michael’s tactical security vehicles—a heavily armored black Suburban—had already backed into the entrance. The door flew open, and one of the operatives from the hallway reached out to grab them.
"Get in! Get in!" the man yelled.
Grace threw herself and Maya into the leather interior of the SUV just as another round of gunfire echoed from the roof of the adjacent building.
A second later, Michael fell from the bottom of the fire escape ladder, landing heavily in the snow. He scrambled to his feet, his face covered in blood, and dove into the back of the Suburban just as the driver slammed the vehicle into reverse.
The SUV roared out of the alley, its reinforced tires tearing through the snowbanks as several bullets pinged harmlessly off the bulletproof glass of the rear window.
Grace clutched Maya to her chest, her whole body shaking as she looked at Michael. He was leaning back against the leather seat, gasping for air, his hand pressed against a deep gash on his temple.
"Where... where are we going?" Grace whispered, her voice cracking.
Michael looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a grim, uncompromising resolve. "To the only place they can't touch us. My private estate. And then, Grace... we are going to find your husband. Because he is the only one who has the encryption key to stop this drug from being distributed to every hospital in the country on Monday morning."

HOOK FOR NEXT CHAPTER:
As the armored SUV sped out of the city limits, Michael's phone buzzed with an incoming video call. When he answered, the screen showed a dark, concrete basement. Tied to a wooden chair, his face battered and bruised, was Grace’s ex-husband, Evan. Standing behind him, holding a syringe filled with a milky white liquid, was Thomas Sterling—Michael’s own Chief Operating Officer. "Hello, Michael," Sterling smiled. "I believe you have something of mine. Let's make a trade. The girl for her father."
